N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

I had been enjoying the N900 for the three weeks since I received it.  I didn't run into any of the reboot or other problems. With no warning, however, the mini USB port came undone from inside the device. I already sent the device off for warranty replacement but the warranty isn't going to replace all the settings and data I spent hours to do. It's my own fault for not storing a backup file off the device. Once the mini USB failed, the only option left was bluetooth or infrared to get data off the device but I decided I would just start from scratch instead.  Anyway, it looks like I was just unlucky because I havfen't seen anyone else having the same problem.  I'm relieved it's not an N97 lens scratch type issue.

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

There is a way you can back up your data on the N900 without the USB port or using data cables, for future seeing as you've already sent the device away.

  1. Menu
  2. More..
  3. Backup
  4. New backup

From there you can create a back up of everything and make the back up to a MMC. So if you were to have another N900, you would simply insert the MMC into the new N900, and restore your backup.

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

I got the device back before Federal Express arrived to take it away. I can't explain why I didn't think of what's not a complicated solution but I am very grateful for your response.  I think I was too emotional (anger) when it happened.  Anyway, I'm off to walmart to get the cheapest MMC I can find.  THanks agian.

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

Your topic is very interesting because i have the same problem with my USB. It was crashed too. I want to ask you about your warranty. When i brought my phone to the service they told me my case isn't the warranty. I'm interesting in the your case and what Nokia corp or service told to you. And at last could you tell me where are from?? Maybe only in my country this situation can be possible.

Thankful in advance, Vlad

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

What do you mean when you say "crashed?"  The problem I had was physical.  After charging the device, when I tried to disconnect the cable from the device, the USB connector came out of the device still attached to the charging cable. It seems like it came undone from inside the device. Nokia's warranty procedure is you have to send the faulty device to them.  They then evaluate the device and replace or repair it under warranty, unless the fault was caused by something that the warranty doesn't cover (dropped in water, abuse, etc.)  I hope this helps.

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

Yes! It's the same. After disconnecting USB cable from the device, connector came out of the device in connection with removing stamps. But after i gave my N900 to the official service center they told me warranty does not apply to this. But this crash isn't my fault! But i consider you sent the device to the official Nokia in Finland, didn't it?? Have you received any information about their reaction?

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

I sent the device to the North America center in Indiana (Brightpoint).  It will likely arrive there sometime during the coming week.  I will rep;ort what Nokia tells me.  I can't imagine a clear hardware failure wouldn't be covered by the warranty.  The warranty exclusions I'm aware of are moisture damage and physical abuse such as dropping or causing the device to break apart through abnormal use.

What do you mean when you say the connector came out of the device "with stamp?"

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

I just had the same problem, the connector for the mini usb came out. I went to a official Nokia service centre and was told the warranty does not apply to this problem. I don't understand this because its clear there's a manufacturing problem here.

They said it would cost upwards of £30 to fix

Clear! I have returned my device in official Nokia shop, they promised me to do the examination of my breakage. I hope they will finish and give me result after 1 week. What about stamp, a'm sorry but it is difficult for me describe you... i'll try and reply you later)

Too! In official service they told me that the warrant doesn't cover this problem but (!) it costs ( in Moscow) about 300$ it is a third of the cost.

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

This is very troubling. I really don't like the direction this thread is taking. I am going to be extremely disappointed with Nokia if they don't put this right.  I have to ask myself what the warranty does cover if an integral hardware component can fail and not be covered!

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

Yes! I absoltely agree with you, but it wil be very pity if I lost my money (NB in Russia we can't buy devicies with the contract so I have to pay the full cost). I will have to pay again for repearing it and there is no garrranty that it won't crash again after 1 year, foк example. PS after you get your device back, write here their decision. Thanks in advance.

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

I don't know if this will ease the pain but I am not sure if any operator is subsidizing the N900 as yet.  I can confirm that I paid full retail.  Furious is too mild a word to describe what my reaction will be if Nokia does anything other than ship a new replacement to me within one day of receiving my now useless device.

I expect the answer within two days.  Federal Express will deliver it to Brightpoint tomorrow.  I will report Nokia's ruling in this forum as soon as I receive it.

This issue is starting to remind me of the infamous N97 camera lens scratch.

Yes...it is very strange for company which is famous for its quality. What about subsidies i told this because I know in a lot of countries (including USA) you can buy devices cheaper. I hope that Nokia will  have finished their analyse by the end of this week, and I'll post the results here.

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

FYI Nokia and N900 users: this is NOT the fault of users.  The root cause was poor design design of using a surface mount female USB connector rather than through-hole mount.  The reports of incidents are piling up, the majority resulting from casual use soon after purchase.

Someone in Maemo Devices needs to take this seriously.  The connector and mount method need to be changed ASAP if they have not already.  Don't blame the users; honor the warranty and human decency and replace broken devices.

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

Ok, as the number of cases increases and Nokia denies claims or does not communicate with the unlucky customers (I had to call NOkia to confirm they received my device even though their warranty/repair procedures say they would contact me "as soon as they receive the device") I continue to watch this situation with disappointment and concern. The device has been at the warehouse since 12 January and Nokia's replacement window is up to 30 days.

If Nokia doesn't put this right, I intend to dispute the purchase payment with my credit card company.  I encourage anyone else who papid by credit card to do the same if Nokia doesn't repair or replace our N900s.  We are watching you Nokia...

Re: N900 hardware fault (mini USB port)

I called for status today and a Nokia rep told me my device would be replaced under warranty within three weeks.  They received the device one week ago today.  Hopefully, there have been some design improvements to resolve the faulty micro USB port.  Juju, please let us know what kind of repair gets done.  I will report whether the replacement device has a different micro USB port design.
