Looks like N900 can't play video, will Nokia improvement this?
Tried:
.MKV ---- not play
.VOB ---- not play
.avi-----"Audio Codec not supported"
.mpg----" Audio Codec not supported"

It will play avi and mpg but its the codec that was used when creating it thats no good.
Convert the video with a different codec until you get one that works.

Two files I happen to have lying around.. one plays, the other reports unsupported codec.. seems AC3 is out!
Can't play:
RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x 528, 23.98 fps, video: XviD, audio: Dolby AC3 (4 channels, 48000 Hz)
Can play:
RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 512 x 384, 23.98 fps, video: XviD, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)

Should point out, when trying to play the clip above, it reported unsupported audio codec! so AC3 does indeed appear to be unsupported, at least in AVI files maybe?

Convert the video with a different codec until you get one that works.
How do you do this Crispy?

There are lots of converters out there.
Super used to be common with the n95
do a search for AVS video converter, ive found that to be the most stable.
Hint
get a small film clip to use and play with settings till it looks best on your N900

Well seems like its very picky about what it likes to play.
It will not play anything over 800 x 480 res
It only seems to like Avi at 800 x 480
Hopefully in this almighty of an awaited update this might change

Hi all,
I've tried several formats too, the best way I found is to use Pinnacle studio HD and then convert to mp4 rescaling down to 800x480 res, works like a treat. I even converted last night's Top Gear from BBC HD (I get it through satellite on a technotrend PC receiver, recordings go straight to my HDD), the native format is in H.264 .TS in high definition, looks great on the N900's screen.

That's funny because that's exactly what I'm trying to play. I have Top Gear HD in MKV with the following settings:
H.264, 1280 x 720, Millions
AC3, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
25 fps
Says "Unable to play media. Media format not supported."
AVI files play awesomely. Thing that sucks is I transferred all my DVD collection to MKVs at home, when I probably should've done MP4s...?

Hell that should work but I think you'll have to downscale a bit, I get the feeling that the N900 doesn't like videos over it's maximum display resolution.
Pinnacle PCTV HD does the trick great.

There is an application (I think still in the extras-devel) that allows mkv
AC3 audio? This isn't a cinema system! I wouldn't expect dolby to work!
Standard formats are used, like in most hand held video players. Use mpeg layer 2 audio.
And as for VOB? Thats DVD format, they're huge. Its not a "DVD" player.
Technology at this size is limited in what it can and can't do

I did get vobs to work on my N900. I thought it would only work with kMplayer but it recognized a 1.2 gb vob on my microdisk and played it in the basic player. I do have extra codes installed. I used to spend hours converting for my N97 so that I could watch videos now I can just copy them to the hard drive and play the videos natively.....I love my N900
