Re: N900 Is it the way forward?

Now I understand there's to be an agreement between Intel (?) and Nokia and they will together develop a new OS called Meego?

So is the 900 to become an orphan?

Also, somebody please set me straight.  Does the N900 have an FM radio reciever or not.  The website specifications are conflicting.

Re: N900 Is it the way forward?

Meego is the joint effort between intel and Nokia. Maemo6 may be Meego.. Maemo5 might be Meego compatible.. The N900 might get Maemo6.. lots of ifs and maybes.. nothing concrete

The N900 does have an FM receiver.. but you should be aware that it requires CPU to playback.. essentially the radio is connected to the input of the N900's sound card.. it has to record and simultaneously playback in order to head the radio.. bit of a design flaw, which is why it wasn't enabled out of the box..

download the fm radio app here:

Re: N900 Is it the way forward?

I don't think they will "orphan" the N900 - the hardware is too good - it would be stupid.

And in the FM/Internet radio theme - how do you get rid of the Internet channels that came on the phone - stuff from countries whose language I don't speak and am never going to visit.  I see no way of deleting them???

Thanks

Sandy

Re: N900 Is it the way forward?

I agree with Sandy on this one.

I bought the N900 yesterday (after the MeeGO news was announced) simply because the hardware is the best you can get for a mobile device now ( Nexus one only provides a boosted Iphone alternative and  Droid is Droid...)

Its a bit thick compared to whats in the market but it fulfills its promises so far.

Now if this piece of technology is running a linux kernel now then am sure it will run a newer verion in 12 months time. As for the Apps it will take time when I got my Iphone 2G (yes I fell for Apple's touch trap...never again afterwards) it was the same.

Bear in mind that it is Nokia (the Market leader for Smartphones) that is behind Qt the future development tools for the N900. I am confident only good things are to come.

Cheers

Re: N900 Is it the way forward?

It's the only way forward.

With the next firmware update we will see QT at the core of Maemo...  One of the issues with the N900 is that the roadmap has been laid for over a year-  QT being the way forward.  So many developers have been counseled to focus on QT for development so that they can have portability between Symbian and Maemo.

One of the reasons N900 has "less" applications them people expect is that many of these apps are waiting in the wings in QT.

Currently the N900 is the only Nokia device currently powerful enough and ready for a full QT implementation.  So N900 users will be the first to fully appreciate QT and the new UI features it brings.

Meego is a brilliant move for the Maemo world and N900 users.  Meego will run ( currently runs in labs) on the N900 and will be extended to web tablets ( a la ipad), automotive integration, household white goods... we all get giddy when we can use our cellphone as an IR remote... Imagine when your N900 is fully integrated with your car.   All of your QT applications will run across handheld, tablet, netbook, car.....

So yes the N900 is higher maintenance then a symbian device like the N97, but I am  more certain that I will be running QT and Meego on my N900, then running Symbian 3 on my N97.

Re: N900 Is it the way forward?

Thanks for trying Sandy.  I'll check that site you listed.

If anyone else knows how to install the linux "Office" I'd sure like to know how. I downloaded it but not getting anywhere loading it.

Bought the latest, greatest thing but it's not getting me anything more than old technology.  $625 not too well spent.

Re: N900 Is it the way forward?

I started this thread in Jan  and I'm really disappointed with NOKIA not the N900 - I can see it has potential but I'm getting considerably disappointed with support.  Tonight I rang seeking advise on why i can not download anything from Ovi (i keep getting "application package not found).  i was told i had the wrong firmware - 2.2009.5.1 is not up to date.  I've now spend the last 3 hrs trying to download software 1. to find out i'm on the correct firmware and 2. OVI store does not work with the N900.  Can someone advise me IF Ovi is usable on N900 and when will the N900 be fully supported by Nokia.  Do i need to return this handset to Vodafone, as it's not fit for purpose and go to the iphone?
