lets see here
1. no contact customization
True, not yet
2. no voice dialing
not yet, may never arrive
3. No java support
Porting an entire JRE to Maemo is a lot of work for non-native applications.. what are actually thinking of running and how would you expect them to look on the N900?
4. phone has 32GB but due to hardware limitations, only a small amt of that can be used for installed application storage space
2Gig of storage for apps? Even open office would only use only use 650Meg.. This is essentially a phone.. what exactly are you intending to install in this 2gig of space!?!??!
5. FM transmitter software has to be done via third party?
Is this really a problem? MSN/AIM/ICQ support is available via third party, even though the messaging infrastructure is built in, plus the radio app isn't that complicated.. Maemo is all about third party apps
6. Extremely short battery life?
I've never left it idle for a full day, so I don't know the best I can expect.. It is irritating they didn't cram in the larger battery from the N97.. that would've been good..

In addition, if you are a Linux user (or know enough about it), you will find indispensable that you can SSH into your phone. This is a KILLER feature compared to the N97, or any other phone for that matter (think VPNs and ssh -X!!).
I think it's a shame you sent back your N900, especially if you're an "apt-get" guy.
I agree with most of what you said although the fact that debian apps "run" on maemo is not quite as convincing as them being able to be usable on maemo.
it took me about 2 days to wish i still had the n900 to play with. loved ssh you are right and all the linux stuff, and Iactually was not that unhappy about the size of the maemo-capable app catalog. the big drawback was the fact that i could not trust the phone for an 10-hour battery life. i had to always carry my n97 or n82 everywhere. i know that if nokia sticks with maemo (will they?) I will be back as I do consider the hardware and the OS to be far superior and more flexible than any of its serious competitors -- android, blackberry or winmo.
i'll be back.

1. Are they even working on it? I like having different ring tones for different people. makes using the phone that much easier
2. No voice dialing on a cell phone? I mean really now I got plenty of old phones that do it Blackberry pearl 8120, LG PM-315, etc. This pretty much should be a standard feature here especially with all of the hands free laws coming into effect...
2a. No remote sim + 2 above = cannot use in BT enabled car other than having the car act as a giant headset
3. that means one looses out the the VAST majority of java applications that are available as quick time killers.
4. In this forum you will find a lot of posts where people could not apply firmware updates due to lack of space...now that IS an issue.
5. Can you explain why this was not part of the phone to begin with?
6. If the phone cannot make it though the day on a charge while listening to MP3 or radio and take some calls, there is something wrong with it. Even my LG Arena KM900 can make it through the day with BT enabled, talking for 1 hour and FM radio enabled.

So... In a nutshell, the N900 is RUBBISH and I'm stuffed with a 2yr O2 contract. Incredibly disappointed. I used to be a keen Nokia user, then I moved to the HTC products and was absolutely delighted. The N900 promised so much more, but it is actually barely more than a beta test. I am quite sure I shall never buy another Nokia device again.

hmm, im pretty sure this thread was dead already, but since its been revived...
something tells me yeuemmaimai confused the fm transmitter with fm receiver. fm transmitter is already in the software (although its finicky without the widget), fm receiver just needs to be downloaded.
firmware updates require space on the rootfs partition/drive, which isnt used by the majority of fully released/optimised apps.
not sure about the issues with the battery life, but my n900 lasts through 13 hours of wma lossless playback, with web browsing, calls, and sms, and still have 40% battery life left. the majority of complaints with battery life are from people who are used to symbian phones, where the battery meter will always say 100% until the battery is actually 30%, then the battery meter starts to lose a bar or two. n900 battery meter is more accurate, which is good for managing your use of the phone.
lack of java support is slightly annoying. however, the only java based app i used on symbian was a program called jnomad which allowed me to view bus timetables on my phone much more easily. cant use this program on n900, however, i can just download the pdf of the bus timetables and just view that.
only thing that annoys me is the lack of a zoom function for videos.
aside from that, its an awesome device once you become familiar with it.
