I have just tried to do a video call to a Skype account, but the video doesn't show. I can't see my contact and they can't see me.
All i get is a square with an avatar in it. How do I enable video calls for Skype so that we can both see each other?
I do have the new firmware update too.

Just to be sure on this, when you say you tried to do a video call, did you actually say 'enable video' or did you just click 'call'?
Having a square box with an avatar sounds like a regular call. Also it only works if they have the latest Skype on a PC, or a phone that permits it. Not sure how that works on non-N900 phones though as this is currently the only phone that lets you make skype video calls, but the others may let you receive them

I downloaded Skype from the website and set-up a test account. I then added myself as a contact on this test account.
On Skype I pressed video call and I could see myself on my cam. On the N900, it started ringing, but it just said "Answer" or "Reject". There was no option to "enable video".

Doesn't work that way. On the computer you click 'call with video' and the N900 when you answer will automatically answer with video. 'Enable video' is if you make a call from the N900 as voice, then tap the blue arrow.

I pressed video call on computer, but n900 didn't answer using the video. Then when I tried to call the test account back, there was no option to enable video. I pressed the blue arrow, but enable video was not there.

in Skype (computer) click tools or options and 'look for updates' or however it's worded. The version you downloaded probably isn't actually the latest one.

When I answer or recieve a Skype call, I press the blue arrow next to call and I have the following options:
New call to number
New call to contact
Hold call
Nothing else comes up.
The version of Skype I have is 4.2.0.169

Sounds like the N900 isn't recognising the other one has video capability.
You're using integrated Skype through VoIP accounts, and haven't downloaded the application to your phone, right?

Yes. That is correct. I set up my Skype account on using the VoIP and IM accounts setting on the phone. I checked the settings in the contacts menu and "Display video calling option" is ticked.

Ok, is the test account recognised in your contacts list? If it is, open the contact card while your availability is set to 'online', and it should say Skype IM, Skype Call, Skype video call.
Does it say that?

Hey, it has worked. When I went into the contacts list, it asked me to authenticate the test account I made on Skype. Then when I did the camera option was available on my phone and I could accept video calls.
Thanks for all your help.

What's your situation? Do you have the very latest Skype on your PC?

Playing catchup on some of the 'other' things that pr 1.2 has brought as i'm still trying to figure out why my VNC no longer accepts a password. so looking at this thread, it looks like we're able to do video calls. so i saw your post where it said to check the test/echo contact and see if video call is on there. on mine it's not. i'm in the process (as i type this) of downloading the latest version of skype on pc.
Is there anything i need to do on the phone itself?

My personal experience was very easy (my difficulty is getting nokia messaging to send!). I simply updated to 1.2 and i have a friend i regularly talk to on Skype. At first there was no option for video calling, they logged on later and it appeared - i clicked their name and it had the usual 'skype call' 'skype im' and under that it had 'skype video call'.
What i'd suggest doing first is download the latest skype on your PC (the version is listed in this thread i believe), log in with a separate account to the one on your N900, do 'echo' and check it's working and also connect a webcam if possible. Then add that accout to your contacts list in the account you actually use (so, the one on the N900 needs your 'test account' added in the contacts list). Go online for both, open contacts and click on that contact and with any luck it should say 'video call'

here you go.
be sure you are set up first:

open your contact that you want to call. be sure that it has a skype address already saved. it will look like this:

it will start to initiate the call. once picked up, then it will look like this. tap on the menu on top:

a drop down menu will show. inititiate the video ability:

then it will show horizontally split with the options on the right and thier picture or camera image on the left. tap on camera...after a few seconds, you will kick in. this will work n900-any pc, and n900-n900.....over wifi, and over the tmobile network.

hope that helped!
