I can't connect to the nokia account from the phone, I have set up the user name and password and can connect from a computer, but when I try from the phone I get a "Service currently unavailable"
Even if I try and create a new account it doesn't work. it appears as if it is not connecting to the server from the phone.
The internet has been setup on the phone and is working fine, I can access all web sites I have tried.
The product number is RM-696

(I have updated this post on November 8th to include the official FAQ about this issue.)
Hi all,
we're sorry to hear that you have been having problems. Thank you all who emailed your account details, they have helped the Nokia account team to investigate this issue.
Here is the official Nokia FAQ about this issue:
What to do if I cannot connect to my Nokia account in Nokia N9?
If Nokia account connection in Nokia N9 fails constantly with the error "Service currently unavailable" even though the internet connection is working properly (checked e.g. with web browser), the phone may need to be reset to recover. This can be done in the following way:
If Nokia account works correctly, copy the media files back to the phone with Nokia Link and recreate the original settings manually. Don't restore the backup. Re-download the required country maps via Wi-Fi connection (select Maps > Options > Manage maps > Options > Add maps.)
You can download Nokia Link from

It seems that clearing the device has helped with this issue:
Settings -> Reset -> Clear device.
Note that this will delete all your data and restore the original settings, so please make a back-up of your personal data to a computer, and save all pictures, videos and other stored files before doing this.
edit: added more information about making the back-up.

Yep, that solved my problem. Thanks for the help.

Clearing the device worked for me too. Unfortunately it wipes all apps and data from the device as well. I made a backup first but clearing wiped the backup too.
Even worse, after reseting, the Twitter app won't let me configure it saying "Sorry, can't connect to Twitter" every time I try. Guess I need to reset it again!!
It really shouldn't be necessary to clear the device to recover from a transient network error.

(TL;DR: yes it works but do make sure you save your .backups folder to your computer.)
The above indeed solved the problem. A few thoughts;
1. I had initially (on first power up) not connected the N9 to my (existing) Ovi account. I am unsure if this is part of the problem, but you may want to take this into consideration if testing for this problem.
2. I had enabled developer mode, but I can not recall with 100% certainty if I did attempt a connect to Ovi before enabling dev mode. Again, this might be something to test for (meaning both with and without dev mode enabled).
3. I saw a hard reset as something to try, because a traffic analysis on my router showed that (prior to the reset) the N9 would not even attempt to contact Ovi. All other functionality prior to the reset seemed fine on the phone and traffic on the router for those activities was as expected (meaning I can be reasonably certain my traffic analysis was not faulty).
4. prior to hard reset, I took a backup, connected the phone in USB storage mode to my Linux PC, copied over the directory .backups (note; this is a hidden directory. It will not show in a graphical file browser by default, but most will have an option to show hidden files) and copied the directory back to the phone after the hard reset. This allowed me to restore as expected. Not using Windows, I can not say if the Nokia Windows software automates some of these steps, I guess it does, but you still might want to add a note to the hard reset instructions.
5. network traffic analysis shows that after hard reset the phone connects to 2.19.7.249 (whois reports this as owned by AkamaiTechnologies) and 66.235.138.2 (Adobe SaaS Network Engineering) are these connections expected? Please note; this is not a complaint that my device phones home, but rather a question on whether I should be paranoid and look for a rootkit. While this seems not very likely, given the address owners, I'd like to be sure.
6. While twitter does not work for me after the hard-reset procedure, neither did it work before. Not being a heavy twitter user I had not bothered to look intio this right now. I see some https connects to Akamai machines. I am unsure if these are for twitter or another service (availability was offline for all other accounts but feed updates were still enabled). If you tell me which machine/netblock the twitter account setting attempts to connect to, I can look for traffic on my router. That will let us know if the phone is trying or not to initiate a connection to twitter.
Kind regards,
pcfe

Addendum; odd... after restoring my backup, Ovi is gone from the account list and I am back in the state where I started. Minus all the big files I had put on the phone in the last day and seemingly without the preloaded content. Not a catastrophe (I presume sooner or later an eMMC image will be available for download, like it was available for N900) but it means restarting from scratch once again and not restoring the backup this time.

update: dev mode can be removed from the list of suspects. I have hard-reset the device again, configured Ovi account, downloaded some apps and used Maps on the device. After that devel mode was enabled and everything remained functional as expected. I'll now go to re-creating my accounts one by one and will not restore the backup.
created twitter account next. working as expected.

Clearing the device is quite working. But in my case restoring the back-up messing it up it will then again the service account / ovistore unavailable.

Thanks for the comments, this issue is currently under investigation and hopefully we'll soon have more information available how to fix the problem.
If clearing the device as a workaround, please, note that the N9 backup command or Nokia Link backup doesn't copy your media files. So, before trying to clear the device, remember to copy your music, photso and videos to your PC. You can use the Nokia Link copy command to copy the files to PC and copy them back to your device after the reset.

Ok, I tried resetting the phone, after having made a backup. After the reset, the phone was able to connect to my nokia account (for the first time). However, after recreating the stuff from the .backup file, and then trying to access maps, it went back to the old problem of not being able to connect.
The problem is probably somewhere in one of the programs or settings?

I got it to work by copying my contacts to the SIM card, then resetting the phone and finally importing the contacts from my SIM card. I can now access my nokia account, though I have lost all settings and personalizations.
