Hi, there must be a simple answer to this - when people who are contacts in my phone on both sim and phone contacts call me their names don't up just their numbers.

Any ideas?

I`m having the same problem with my 5800, but the problem is that when I tried to call somebody from the contacts it displayes the name and the picturem but when I tried to call him directly from the called numbers it showes only his phone number. At this time I haven`t found any solution.

Your first port of call on these forums should always be the "Pool of Knowledge". There's a post in there detailing possible reasons for the caller's name not being shown: /discussions/board/message?board.id=topfaq&thread.id=28

The thing is that I have checked all possible solutions from that page way before reading it - at it is not working for me !!!!

Did you get your phone SIM-free or did you get it from an operator? If the latter then there's the explanation. Operators regularly introduce bugs into the firmware during the branding process.

Ok. It is not SIM free but it was working for me for the last 1 month and a half and incedeltely it stoped. And it is not workig just for couple of number as far. And I had updated the phone with the latest firmware a days after I bought the phone and as I say it was working just fine till yesterday when it didn`t want to recognize my girlfriends phone number. And today they are 2 more numbers that are not recognized that are in the contacts !

In what format have you stored your numbers - just the phone number (eg: 1234567890), or phone number prefixed by the country code (+441234567890)? It is possible that your network provider might have changed something at their end, and the caller ID being sent to your mobile might be in the format that you're not using. Try editing the contacts by prefixing the number with the country code in your phone and/or SIM, or by removing the country code if you already have stored them in that format.

I assume you can see the contact name in your Inbox, for the SMS that you receive.

As I say. I have done this several times - before and after reseting the phone. And now it is now shown even for the SMS-es. niiiizeeee

correct me if i'm wrong, but you wrote that the numbers are stored in the phone memory AND on the SIM card at the same time. Check if a specific number has multiple entries in the phonebook (like the number 1234567 is stored as 'Jack' and 'Mr. Jackson') as well. If it wouldnt work, try backing up all numbers to the memory card, and erase the phonebook both on the phone and on the SIM. Worked for me on the N73, my 5800 is having its first-time charge, so i cant check the settings page of it

I have deleted all numbers from SIM card and the Contacts were only on the phone. And I have the same problem. Today while I was in the rest room I backed up all the numbers to the memory card and deleted all of them (as I said they were already deleted from the SIM card) so the phone was out of contacts. So this time when I added the problem numbers everything worked. So the solution for me is to add almost 300 Contacts manually.

I think that the problem started as I tried to add contacts from my past Sony Ericsson and it added ONE entry with all of my phone numbers (around 320) in it. I have deleted the Empty name entry and the problem persist. I have tried EVERYTHING+ from the given solutions. So for now this is the resolution for me - to manually add more than 300 entries.

Thank you every body for the help. It didn't really  helped in this situation but I`m sure that it will be for the future user`s. If I have something more as information I will paste it here.

I had this very same problem yesterday, when swapping over from a SE phone. I copied the contacts over from my sim and then made sure that the contacts had no repeats and ran only from the phone memory. All the caller ids come up now.

hi all,i have all the posts related to this problem on this forum(i hope)and nope can't get the phone to work,but my problem is somewhat different to the one posted different,i don't have 300+ contacts only 77 so i tried to clear all contact phone memory+sim,copied them from my second phone and sim,did all the stuff from "the pool of knowledge",the funny thing is that only 1contact doesn't seem to work properly,i don't have any extra data(birthday,caller image etc.)only a personalized ringtone that worked before.

i didn't use my sim on another phone or send/received contacts from another sim/phone......

so any suggestions??

P.S.this is my first nokia phone that has had not 1 but 2 problems.the second one was with battery(turned on-off)because the battery pins were loose..bad design i guess

I have the exact same problem as u told. It is in one of the contacts. when i call her from phone memory it displays the name and when i call her from the dialled calls it shows only the number. even the sms shows only the number. Exact same problem. There is no duplication of contacts and the sim is empty.

Has this problem sorted out for you. Please reply and help. Whats the solution to this. Coz i too have numerous contacts and manual entry will take long and there is no guarantee that thi will work and display her name instead of the number.

Hello. I had this problem too. Basically one day my texts simply stopped coming up as names and were the numbers instead, the same for calls. I hadn't added any new numbers so it wasn't duplicate entries and it was doing this for EVERY number in my contact list, very confusing at first.

I found out what the problem was; there were simply too many messages in my text inbox (over 3000+). As soon as I deleted all of these, the problem didn't occur any more.
