Unlocking in Uk illegal?

Recently I've been told that unlocking phones in UK is illegal? How come? Has the service provider a copyright over the unlocking code? If so they would need to pay a patent on every unlock code heheheh...
Well, I've been told I could go to jail for unlocking phones or for providing a software to do it. Well, let's see.UK Courts regulate their laws and the European Court regulates the whole Europe. The European Union Court clearly states that the customer has the right to choose the Service Provider he or she wants. If the phone was unlocked by one unofficial code therefore this "Unofficial" code isnt breaking any law.It is just the same code but...ah... doesnt cost "an eye".heheheh.

Explaining the process. I've got a PS2,they have their "official products" but other manufactures have the right to produce "unofficial" acessories as well. They dont even ask Sony to produce it.They have the right to do so.Why? Because accordingly to European Union, a company cannot have the "monopoly" over something they make.Therefore.If you're able to "make" a similar "product" that is able to work out with "PlayStation" this will be accepted by the law.
Remmember the Super Ultra Powerfull "Microsoft"? Do you know how much they had been charged for "holding codes"?
That's exactly what the Service Provider does..."hold codes".I do understand they have to discount the "real price" of the phone. That's why they put you under a contract. But after the end of this contract, the phone becomes your property. So you have the right to have this code. And sincerely it's an ultraje asking 20 quids to give it.
So guys go and have your "official" or "unofficial" code.
Have an unlock code or providing it isnt against the law. What is agaisnt the law is breaking a contract. That's all.
Did you know that locking phones in Italy is "against the law". See the point? hehehhe.

Re: Unlocking in Uk illegal?

In the UK the only place you can obtain an unlocking code for a Nokia phone is from the network the phone originated from.

So, if you got a phone from Orange UK, you need to speak to Orange UK to get the unlock code.

No one will with hold the code, it will be given to you once you ask for it. In some circumstances, you may be charged for the code. However this is something you need to discuss with the network themselves.

Nokia does not provide unlocking codes in the UK. By using a third party (i.e someone other than the network the phone came from) to unlock the phone, you could be in breach of your contract with your network.

Quite simply, save yourself the time, hassle and headache by calling the network the phone has come from to get your unlock code.

Re: Unlocking in Uk illegal?

Hi Luiz

I dont understand why you are complaing about having to contact the network to get your handset unlocked rather than some dodgey back street marketeer.

The networks give you a discounted price on the handset and so they lock the handset in order to make an attempt to protect their investment in you.

If you want to use other networks SIM cards in your handset go out and pay full price for the handset rather than being a cheapskate and whinging about having a locked handset.

Just to answer this point, I have never witnessed it but I believe if you put in the wrong unlock code 5 times, the handset will be "hardlocked" and at this point, you can not unlock it using the code which your network would give you to unlock it.
