N70 Software bug

I have a fault with my new nokia N70 phone. This is the third handset I've had from orange, and it has exactly the same fault as the previous handsets. The first problem is with the backup facility, when you backup the phone memory to the memory card, the display fades to white and the phone restarts. The second problem is when you try backing up to a PC using Nokia Backup, part of data suite. When the PC starts downloading from the phone, the phone restarts. The third problem I've had has been with the gallery, whan you browse the gallery, as soon as one of the photos comes up on screen, the gallery exits back to the main menu. These three problems have been exactly the same on all 3 handsets, so there is obviously a software bug. I am reluctant to get another phone from orange, because the next phone will probably have the same fault unless the software is repaired.

Re: N70 Software bug

Have you in all cases, perhaps, been using the same memory card? If so, I'd suspect the card rather than the phones.

Re: N70 Software bug

No, Each phone has been supplied with a new memory card. The only comon factor has been the sim card, but I can't see that being at fault.

Re: N70 Software bug

Hi,

I'm getting the backup error as well.

when I start the backup, the phone screen fades to white, and the PC loses connection to the phone, this happens whether I have the MMC card in the phone or not.

If anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful.

Has a thought whilst typing my first message.

If you turn off the PIN requests and PIN required on new SIM, the backup works.

Hope this helps.

Re: N70 Software bug

I am also on my third N70,
When using backup from phone status bar starts then display fades to white and phone restarts.
This also happens if you try to use the format command - but now got the message "memory card corrupted" card is not usable, have had to get replacement memory card.
Have tried new memory card on new replacement phone Backup and Format initially worked, but after connecting to Nokia PC Suite have found that phone has now got same problem, have checked PIN requests and PIN required on new SIM is turned off, also "Reset Original Phone Settings" as per Orange suggestion with no effect.
Have been advised from Orange that there does NOT seem to be a problem with software and that they were NOT aware of anything in the discussions, but clearly there is, perhaps somebody could make Orange aware of these, as this problem obviously is going to escalate.
Despite this problem so far have been pleased with the N70 but I am reluctant to get yet another replacement.
I am curious whether this is only happening with Orange or any other provider as have been led to believe that Orange tweak software for their own network.

Re: N70 Software bug

I tried turning off the pin , but the phone still fades to white and restarts when you try backing up. I'm glad it's not just me...I thought I was unlucky, but obviously this is a larger problem. I've tried reporting to nokia, but they haven't even replied. Will get back on to orange and see what they have to say.

Re: N70 Software bug

I tried formatting a card in the phone also, and it did fail halfway through and leave the card unusable. If you have a card reader on your PC you can format it on that as "FAT" (not fat32) and it should work.

Re: N70 Software bug

I have been back onto orange, and they advised me to reset the hardware (*#7370#). This wiped all the data from the phone, and once I re-uploaded the contacts the backup did work. When I then tried backing up to a pc using data suite the phone restarted and I am now back to square one, as the handset backup doesn't work any more. The ball is back in orange's court. The help desk chap did ask if I've tried removing orange's software contribution to the phone all together, but this involves getting a nokia shop to flash the firmware and restore the phone to an un-fiddled orange-free nokia, as nokia intended it to be. A last resort probably, but it would get rid of oranges annoying theme which doesn't work, and the irritating "quick access" menu. Will keep everyone posted as to their next suggestion.

Re: N70 Software bug

First Reset hardware (*#7370#). Wipes data from phone,
Then sync CONTACTS ONLY and NOT calendar, this seems to fix problem, have raised issue with Nokia who are looking into possible Bug with sync dates in calendar.

Hope this helps

Re: N70 Software bug

Any more feedback on this issue?

I've had my N70 on Orange for approx 2 weeks now and the phone is great except for one major issue...

The phone keeps losing the supplied Orange 64MB RS-DV-MMC card. This seems to be purely at random too, first the phone will think the card is corrupted and if left long enough the phone won't then see the MMC card at all. If I power cycle the phone then 90% of the time the memory card will be seen again for a time before going AWOL again.

If I take the memory card out of the phone and use my PC with card reader then all the data is there and visible without any issues. I've tried re-formatting the memory card hoping this may solve my problems but it hasn't.

BTW, As some people have stated above I too can't use the PC suite to make a backup or use the phone to reformat the RS-DV-MMC card as the phone will just reboot. I have used my PC to reformat the memory card as FAT (aka FAT16).

Would the '*#7370#' suggestion above cure my problems?

Actually, thinking back on it I think my problems started from when I first tried using PC Suite to do a full backup, before that the phone seemed okay. I'll give OCS a call in the next few days as this is becoming really annoying.

Anyone else on Orange having similar problems?

I suspect that getting a new card will cure the problem.

Re: N70 Software bug

Hi Guys!

Sorry to hear you are all having problems with the N70, I have tried this out here with ours and did not get this problem. What network are you all on, also does anyone else get this issue?

Let everyone know what firmware you are using here by entering *#0000# on the phone in standby.

Re: N70 Software bug

My software version is:

V 2.0537.1.7
18-09-05
RM-84

I'm also on Orange

The way to get this fault is to try backing up the phone contents using the PC Suite software. The handset will restart, then the handset backup won't work any more.

I've been back onto Orange, and they basically can't do any more. They seem to think it is the Nokia software at fault, not Orange's. I did see someone in the Carphone Warehouse service centre in bristol, and he said this is a common problem with all N70's, and he said there would be some new software out soon. Whether this is true or not I don't know.

Re: N70 Software bug

Hi,

I'm also on Orange...

Firmware:
V 2.0537.1.7
18-09-05
RM-84

I've pretty much deduced that the slightest pressure or movement on the memory card hatch door will cause the phone to lose its connection to the memory card. I can now cause the issue consistently and it doesn't have to be that much pressure on the hatch/flap. If I take the memory card to my PC it will read it first time, every time, so I am convinced the phone has a fault. I've contacted Orange Customer Services and I have a new N70 Handset being delivered to me tomorrow.

I'll let you guys know how I get on with the new handset when I receive it.

Just another observation but I am sure that PC Suite was also causing issues as the memory card issue was much worse until I performed a reset with codes *#7370# and *#7780#. After I did these resets the memory card recognised more frequently and only lost when small movement or pressure was applied to the flimsy memory card cover hatch.

Any more thoughts greatfully received.

Got the new replacement N70 this morning. My old N70 was definitely at fault. New phone seems great so far. New phone is exactly the same firmware as the previous one.

Re: N70 Software bug

Hi Karim,

Sorry, I should have put more info in my post. My issues were that the old phone would randomly lose access to the memory card and also if trying to format the card the phone would fail at about 1/3 progress then reboot.

The old phone had a faulty memory card holder/frame. The card should push in against a firm spring then lock or 'click' into place with the hatch door just acting as a dust guard. On my old phone this spring was very weak and the card would not 'click' into the holder, so the card was actually being held in the phone by the dust flap/hatch door. Therefore the slightest pressure or movement on the right hand side of the phone and contact between the card and the phone would be lost.

The replacement handset with the firm spring and correct location of the card has cured this issue. I have also successfully formatted my old RS-DV-MMC card without problems.

One caveat... The original topic of this post was with regards the functionality of the PC Suite software and performing phone back-ups. I've not been brave enough to try this out as I can perform these functions manually via my PC and BlueTooth generally. From my past experiences with PC Suite (Nokia 7650) and this current version 6.16 & 6.18 it's a bit too buggy and unstable for my liking and I'd rather not risk introducing new errors or issues onto my phone, so I won't be trying a PC Suite back-up anytime soon although I may use the file browswer and other functions etc. Call me chicken! :smileytongue:

The old N70 did used to fail on a back up via PC Suite and then reboot both on USB cable and BlueTooth connections.

Hope that helps!! If you need any more info then let me know :smileyhappy:

Finally, I must add that I am very happy with the replacement N70 handset and the response from Orange.
