Hi All,
Same problem faced. Solved yesterday after upgraded Software to V 50.0.005.
I’d started to feel the same pain from last January. By February 2010 I went to Nokia service center and they told Hardware prob… my warrenty was over and they asked 7,000 BDT (100$) for fixing. I felt a shock and refused to go for servicing. Started to search for the isue and reached this site. One forum (http://nokia5800.net/have-you-experienced-the-noki
Last night found new software release and installed. After that about 12 hours gone .. not faced the issue yet. Thanks for your postings and suggestions. -Amin

UPDATE YOUR PHONE THEN YOUR PROBLEM WILL BE SOLVED. TYPE *#0000# select OPTIONS from it. and it will prompt you for download click YES. the downloading may take some time. after the download, give install updates. During the update you cannot do anything after it has been updated. your phone will be normal again. data charges may apply for downloading.

I have the same lcd display problem. So far it only occurs in the mornings when it is cold. Ok after it has been in my pocket for a few minutes to warm up. It is clear it is a hardware problem. I am past the 1 year warranty. I called the Melbourne care centre to find out:-
- if they were aware of this problem.
- how long it would take to fix.
- approximate cost.
The call centre person had no idea about the problem. Had no idea how long it would take to fix or if the parts were on hand or not. Had no idea of the approximate cost, but a $35 assessment fee would find the problem. I advised the problem was already known. The person offered to log a job so i could drop it in (the only way to get a replacement borrow phone - IF any were available!)
The problem is that I live 3 hours from the care centre and I need to have an idea of how long I may be without this phone. I love this phone. I recommended it to quite a few people that have bought one. (Right now the iPhone 4 is looking good.) It is amazing that such a good phone maker is so brilliant at annoying it's loyal customers. This was about my 6th Nokia purchase. Maybe the last?
I am also amazed that Nokia ask for all the feedback in the world, but never have I ever found it possible to contact a real live person that can communicate. You can waste all your time responding to automated feedback requests. But why?

The most popular screen probelm in a Nokia 5800 xm was the screen garbage or snowy screen whenever the phone locked or unlocked.
This error appeared to vanish if you started a heavy app like a game (Global race).
While the Nokia PC Ovi Suite 2.2.0.245 did not detect that the system firmware upgrade, the command on the phone (*#0000#) detected the new version and downloaded using inbuilt wifi and home wifi connection.
The update solved the problem and I am now a proud Nokia user once again.
A proactive method to reach out to 5800xm users to inform of the update would have helped Nokia.

SOLVED using firmware update v.50.0.005.
This procedure is easy and end user doable. Does not take to service centre or open the phone yourself.

With the latest firmware (52.0.007) and the problem still persists.
A temporary solution is pressing the camera button, and slide twice the lock button (lock unlock).
This is not a screen issue, but it seems to be related with the light sensor of the device.
A few criticism: I love nokia and i'm suggesting the following in order to avoid milions of 5800's users to hate the company :
i - Notify officially about the cause of the issue
ii - Repair at no cost all affected devices (also these out of garancy)
iii - Nokia should turn to target again to quality values (like my immortal nokia 6600)
