Hi there, I've come from the land of Motorola to the new 6280.

For those people technically oriented, or just game, motorola phones can have a massive amount of factory based configuration changes made by special tools (commonly refered to as SEEM editing).

What is the equivalent tool / process for nokia phones?

e.g., changing default timings etc.. on backlight, screen saver timing etc.. etc..

First of all..I got to congratulate you on joining the good side..Nokia, and leaving the dark side..any other brand!

If this is what you mean, changing basic phone settings, eg:

Backlite
Time
Look/Theme

Go to (on the phone) Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone Settings > General/Standby/Display.

For Backlite timeout:

Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone Settings > Display > Light time out

Now just edit it.

For the backlight thingy, you can't change it on 6280. For the other that you suggest, yes.

you could try this ... it's kind of silly but it works ... if you need the display for lighting ...
you need a data cable...
create a new folder somewere... and on your pc create a gif image .. blank ... and make a lot of copies ... then transfer it to your mobile... in that folder ... and when you need tha light ... just [open in sequence] the gif's....
