i don't know about the communicators... but i tried n finally succeeded in backing up my msg of my NOKIA N73 M which were saved in my memory card... i actually copied a folder in e:/private/1000484b to my pc via mass storage mode then formatted my card n copied it back to my phone...  n now all my msg whether sent or received, in draft or in my folders... all are back!!

I had N73 before and i used www.phonecopy.com to backup all my data include SMS over the air to their web portal and ther is posibility to export it easily to downloadable file. Cool feature is SMS archive which stores deleted items.
