e72. I try, and I give up

[ Edited ]

I really hate writting this

I own a e71 & 5880 xpress with mild but optimistic expectations

Now ... Its been less than 6 hours that I bought a new e72 and I will return it as soon as possible, its simply the best example of how can the worst possible software written in a phone annoy a user as much as to forget that his holding one fine and beautiful piece of technology.

Who? please tell me who! is the software development manager of the company?

The interface is as disturbing as it can be, every time you try to do whatever yo have to, it answer tons of "are you sure", "I can not do it without it", "can I help you doing in the easy way this thing that was easy in the past but now we made it just as incredibly complicated as we could for the sole purpose of wasting our time and yours", and even worst written in a lingo that only Nokia's IT find excusable when they send themselves brief sms.

ITS A PHONE FOR GOD SAKE
NOT THE BIBLE MEANT FOR INTERPRETATIONS !!!!!

As an example ¿did you know this phone has a Michelin Guide?, but of course.
From startup screen > press home button > search & press applications > search & press GPS > search & press Maps | and then > define or not an acces point > accept or not the extra cost warning regarding roaming > then accept or not the warning of assisted GPS > then search & press Michelin ... I swear I'm not joking

I don't expect Nokia to copy from Apple's or Android's or Palm's even HTC or WinMo ... but please, come on, how can it be that this phone is worst than the predecessor.

Another curiosity, this phone has a compass ... but no app to use it, actually its disabled¿why? someone please explain?
(I could fix it with some blogs & a 3º party app just in case someone wants to help). You can also use the space bar as lintern ... unless there is any other application running in the background (like Nokia's own web browser o email client). Screen transitions? why? does it look like Apple?, someone must have asked: now that we have a faster processor what can we do? and found reasonable the answer: put transitions in between so it ends up being much slower. If your listening to music and put your e72 in your pocket, all the music changes thanks to the magic of the Optical Navi Key ... and the list goes on ans on and on.

Press 5 (when on map) to activate compass direction.

You can turn off transitions under themes

Maps (and its way to the michelin guide) are by default in the upper menu on homescreen....

But since you have so much to complain about I can't care to aswer more then that.. it's obviously a too complicated device for you to handle?

I can send you my old 1208? It works for my grandma even!

Re: e72. I try, and I give up

Thanks Cristoffer for the offer, as I said I own a e71 ... I simply was expecting Nokia to improve the e72 and they did by adding magic/hidden number 5 in maps, and yes your tip to access maps from the home screen removes 2 steps from my long list of steps, thanks again.

Nokia is constantly loosing market share against Apple, RIM and Android (you can read that in several tech websites) and seems that they believe that having the largest market share means they will always hold it. Statistics prove them wrong.

They have a huge success with e71, semi-simple but incredibly powerful phone almost 2 years ago. Now they try to repeat it with the e72 by adding magic/hidden 5 in maps to acces the compass that only the few that read the whole manual, the ones that surf thru blogs or me that had the answer from you, know about. Am I making my point clear?

As I said, its not the Bible ment for tons of interpretations, its a phone, make it simple, make it accessible, don't hide, show. I have a large history of Nokia devices and the hardware has always become better and more reliable, as for the software more obscure, confuse and fill with hidden options.

Lots of muscle & beauty but no brain

Thanks for your tips!

Re: e72. I try, and I give up

Sorry that I was a little harsh in my tone.. but there have been so many complaints, instead of questions, in the support forum.

I absolutely love my E72-1! Only problem I'm having with it, is the lack or 'charging comple' until I pull out the charger plug and put it back.. then it says ' completely charged' in less then a minute.

The 5 key for compass was not needed in the previous version of the maps, (prior to the 3.03) then you had to turn the compass off manually, instead of activating it manually by pressing the 5 key. I myself like this new 'way' better.

As for the hidden functions, not fully covered in the manual.. I think it's fun to dig around a litte, it's almost like X-mas when you find something new and useful. But I agree that they could have documented a few things a bit better.

hehe! everything is fine, I'm just angry on Nokia, not you.

I wrote in the forum with the hope Nokia reads it, I consider myself quite geeky but there is a limit, at least for me. Returned the phone already, will wait for Palm Pixi Plus to reach europe.
