I have an e71 (unlocked, North American version) and the volume through both the factory supplied headset and another Nokia brand (wired) headset I tried simply isn't high enough to hear well in, say, a car at highway speeds. Obviously I have the volume turned all the way up. I'm wondering if there is a "master" volume setting, much like an iPod, that I haven't found yet.
I found another thread where a member mentions limitations put on volume but EU law (although I don't know why that would apply to a North American version). Assuming there is some kind of internal limit, can anyone suggest a wired headset that would suit my needs (I really don't want or need a BT headset).
Thanks!

If your used to having North American designed equipment such as the iPod then, you will indeed notice there is an audio difference.
Unfortunately, Nokia as a european company has to follow guidelines issued by the EU or EU countries, one of the countries in the EU (which will generally dictate the rest of Europe) has set a law on the amount of power a portable device can emit via the headphones. This means that all Nokia devices will not be able to carry a CE marking if they do not conform to this stipulation.
Apple, with their iPod have two different software versions one that restricts the audio output to gain a CE mark for their device in Europe and one for the RoW.
Whilst the Apple restriction is managed via software, I'm guessing that the Nokia handsets do it via hardware. Apple also changed their dock connector so there is a line out output for connection to amplifiers, as well as a headphone line.
Whilst its not a solution for you, all I can offer is information as to why the volume is low.
Shunts...
