Did you connect your phone to your computer and check if the entries are still there?
Also uninstall any you have any 3rd party app that you might have recently installed that access or edits your contacts. Like Nokia Conversations... Windows Live... etc etc.

If you've uninstalled those potentially conflicting 3rd party apps try rebooting your phone first to see if that fixes it.
If it doesnt follow the below steps.
Download and install this Ovi Suite - http://www.ovi.com/services/support/subpage?id=gui
Then backup all your phone content using Ovi. TOOLS - BACKUP. It is advisable not to select Device Settings and Applications as it might again reintroduce the truant app.
Once you've backedup all the content you want then I would advise you to reinstal/upgrade your phone's firmware. Now be careful as THIS WILL DELETE ALL THE DATA & APPS on your phone. So make sure you've backed everything up before doing this. Make sure your phone is fully charged and connected via USB. You can reinstall the firmware from TOOLS - SOFTWARE UPDATES.
You can then restore your backed up data from TOOLS- RESTORE. You will need to reinstall all the 3rd party apps yourself and configure your device settings like ringtones etc etc.

If your desktop Ovi software cant read it you maybe out of luck. Theres one last thing I can suggest.
Sign up on the online Ovi service (ovi.com). Go to contacts.ovi.com and login. Then add your device by selecting E71 & entering your phone number.
You will receive an sms from them on your phone and a code will be displayed on the webpage. Use the code to open the message and save the settings.
Then go to MENU - TOOLS - SYNC and select Ovi and see if you can sync your contacts online (if you're sucessful the sync'd data will show in contacts.ovi.com (refresh the page if required). Mobile data charges to sync will apply unless you use Wifi.
If you can sync it then thats great. After that you can upgrade/reinstall the firmware as per my previous mail and repeat the syncing steps above to get your contacts back into your phone book.
