Symbian S60 devices ship with a certificate manager. Older devices such as those running S40 probably do not have a certificate manager. There are two certificate stores (tabs) in the S60 certificate manager: "Authority" and "Personal". The personal certificate store is initially empty, but the authority certificate store is populated with a number of root certificates of well-known CAs.(Baltimore Cybertrust, Entrust, Equifax, Globalsign, GTE Cybertrust, Geotrust, Nokia, Thawte, Verisign and Valicert).
Some programs also require a certificate to run. It is a digital signature. It contains information about the program, how long will the program run, to which IMEI the program is licensed etc.
Example: Lets say you purchased a program from XYX company for your phone. Your license is valid for, lets say, 1 year. When you download that program to your phone, it comes with a certificate containin information about the program, which company made it etc. So, if it has a certificate you can be sure that it is not hecked (as long as it is obtained form that company). After you install the program, it usually connects to web. To update itself, or to see purchasing or licensing options etc. When it connects the web, your subscription data goes there along with your IMEI, and that program is updated to work with your phone only. So, its certificate info is updated one more time to make sure that no one else steals it.
When trying to install a program, if it says that there is a certificate error there are some reasons:
1. the program was tempered (hacked)
2. the certificate is not among the trusted content providers
3. your IMEI is hacked. like 112333222233
4. the program is ok but unsigned (without certificate to authenticate its originality). you have to allow your phone to accept unsigned programs. (those programs are generally useless and cause trouble with your phone's OS)
Usually, legitimate companies have properly signed programs.
My suggestion: stay away form hacked or pirated or suspicious software.
if you dont have bad habbits like smoking, buy software instead and help create and sustain employment.
Go to Tools ->installations> App. Manager, choose Options -> Settings and set Software installation to All and Online certif. check to Off.

Dear harry_e71_user:
I must confess that there were more than several times when I also used pirate or hacked software. And the event that caused me to stop using hacked sw was my cousin's losing her job. She was a sw developer, and her company had to cut some jobs due to low revenues. Then, I realised that I wasn't really doing the right thing.
And guess what, I even bought a copy of vista. I know it wasn't my smartest purchase but I had to clean my conscience.
Cheers. ![]()
