Hello! I am new to the world of PDA's so please for give my lack of knowlege. I purchased the E71X in hope that I would finally be able to drop the date book I carry with me everywhere. The instructions in the manual are very unclear on how to do this. Can someone please tell me what is the easiest application to use where I can sync both my calendar and my contacts? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated!

If you're on a PC (Windows), use PC Suite from Nokia to sync your phone with Outlook (I think that's the default.)
If you're on a Mac, use iSync (part of Mac OS X) which will sync your address book and calender with iCal.

If you didn't get a PC Suite CD with your device, you can download it from Nokia.com. Make sure you check if you need to download the cable driver as well.
You can also sync using Ovi.com. Just register and specify your device and they'll send you the settings. once you've saved the settings, go to the sync icon in menu>tools>sync. you'll see another sync button bellow the PC sync. click that and you can synchronize your contacts, calendar, and notes to ovi. you can check it online as well.

here is a link where you can sync your data. you can use your gmail to sync contacts and stuff. this you would acutally set up on the gmail in settings. for your calendar and such.
