I've searched around but from what I can tell, there's no native way to view files on my e71x that are shared over a network, when connected to that network's wifi, without throwing down a bunch of cash for apps that really are just streaming through a 3rd parties' server. There are already services out there that do this for free. I'm not looking to stream through 3rd party, I want to stream directly from my network to the phone
My question here is...why is this not possible? From what I can tell this is the case with most smartphones, and I really can't see a reason that phones these days shouldn't be able to do this on their own. Or for that matter, why there aren't a ton of free apps that do this? Seems like it's a relatively simple thing. Anyone care to chime in on this?

I found a python program 'smb4s60' it is suppose to access shares, but I installed the newest Python stuff (2.xx) and cant get it to work I think smb4s60 may only work on older versions of Python but I havent had time to try, plus I cant find the version of python below 1.9x it must be somewhere.
here is the link if you want to try:
there is also the ovi files, I have used that as far as I know it is free
