Turn off E72 Optical Navi Key?

This is a pre-sales question really. I'm 99% sure I'll buy the E72 but just want to know one thing:

Can I turn off the optical navi key and use it in the traditional d-pad way if it's not to my taste?

I asked this a couple of weeks ago when I played with an E72 and they said yes. But seaching the manual I cannot find the option.

Hopefully a proud E72 owner will be along soon to clarify.

Re: Turn off E72 Optical Navi Key?

I had a look at the PDF manual found in Nokia online support but the information is rather basic.

This video seems to hint that it can be turned on or off: http://www.allaboutnokia.com/2009/11/e72-navi-key-live-in-action.html but no real clarification!

Hoping Nokia can provide the official line on this as I have money burning a hole in my pocket!

Hoping Nokia can provide the official line

If you would like official comment from Nokia can I suggest you use the Contact Us option or head to a retail outlet. Nokia rarley comment on these forums.

Good luck

OK, If not the official line from Nokia then at least some clarification from somebody who owns the E72 device that is available to buy today (as opposed to prototypes).

Otherwise I guess I will have to head into a Nokia or Vodafone store to have a play!

Yes, you can turn it off as well as controlling its sensitivity.

Re: Turn off E72 Optical Navi Key?

I have mine turned off, but now I'm not sure how to tell the camera to focus.  On the previous E-series, 't' has always triggered the camera to focus, but it doesn't seem to work for me on the E72.  Previously, sliding my finger over the optical navi key was the only way to trigger a focus.

Hope I'm missing something obvious.

Hi,

The focusing with the NaviPad turned off works a little bit different:

In camera mode you press and hold the center button of the D-Pad (that will do the focusing). Releasing the button takes the picture.

Ah, thanks.  Too bad there isn't a way of focusing w/out taking the picture.  In the past, I found myself relying on whether the focus indicator turned red or not to determine if the picture was worth taking :-/

Re: Turn off E72 Optical Navi Key?

I've read the issue that when Opti Navi key is turned off, then there doesn't seem to be a way of getting the camera to auto-focus by half-pressing the Navi key.  I decided to do some experiment and here's what I found out:

(with the Navi key enabled:smileyhappy:

Looks like the "half-press" to auto-focus in camera is actually not "half-press". Touching  the Navi key while using the camera initiates auto-focus. It's not actually a half-press, just the sensory touch to the Navi key would do.

(with Navi key disabled:smileyhappy:

I notice that since the auto-focus works actually if the Navi key detects a finger touching the optical Navi key, but now since we've turned it off, this "sensory feedback" doesn't work for the camera and it doesn't do the auto-focus thingy.  However, I think pressing the Navi key button for a longer period of time will do auto-focus thingy. Only upon releasing the Navi key, does the camera actually take the camera shot.

In summary, it should still be able to make use of the auto-focus thingy, with the Navi key turned Off.
