I've had my E71 since November 2008 and it was working fine up until Friday. Around 5pm on Friday, my phone froze for a while. I turned it off/on. When I recieved a new text message, the icon did not appear on the home screen.

Also, when my phone locks automatically, it usually just shows my wallpaper and the time. Now, there is a big keyhole icon that appears when it locks. And I can't see my picture (wallpaper)!!!

Do I need to update anything? Please help!!!!

you can try to update alright

you can try the following

1)Back up ur phone memory on ur memory card.
2)Then restore ur phone to factory settings by *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default.
3)Remove ur memory card and put phone on general profile.
4)enter *#7370#  is reformat code

final resort if still not fixed

 Press and hold these three keys together -Green dial key, Star key[*], Three key [3]
 switch ON the phone.
 Do not let go the three keys until you see the WELCOME screen displayed and just let it complete the boot process

Thanx for your input jimmyireland! My device is back to normal. The only thing I did was delete over 2000 read text messags from my inbox...lol. The icon is showing again when I receive a text message and that big keyhole from my locked screen is gone too.

I'll keep the information you provided close by in case I need it in the future.

I just had this issue and Googled it. It appears the theme can cause the keyhole on the screen as well.  I was using a theme called "Black Pegasus" on my E71, and when I changed the theme the keyhole disappeared.  I'd say this means its a memory issue.
