Can anyone tell me how to get my phone to make a noise to tell me I've got new email?
I recently got an E71 on the UK's 3 network. I initially set up push email with Nokia Messaging and Email on 3 and have temporarily abandoned these as they were terribly unreliable. I am now using the email service that came with the phone (not sure what it's actually called, if anything) which allows automatic retrieval at user-defined intervals.
However, with this service I can't get the phone to make a noise when it retrieves an email. With Nokia Messaging and Email on 3 my chosen email alert tone sounded when an email came in, but with the default service it's silent. This means I have to look at my phone regularly to see if there are any new emails.
Am I just overlooking some obscurely hidden setting or is this a bug?
(I'm beginning to miss my Mobile Mail service on the E65, which worked perfectly and even allowed me to filter out messages/contacts I didn't want to be pushed.)

I'm guessing that the "email service that came with the phone" you are on about is Mail For Exchange?
Are you using mail for exchange or the POP3 client within the phone to access an ISPs mail server?
On the handset you need to go to:
Menu --> Tools --> Settings --> General --> Personalisation --> Tones --> "Email Alert Tone"
Will change the alert tone in the current profile that you have loaded.

Pg 125
When you get an email do you get the "@" symbol at the top right hand side of the screen, when I get an email, I get the tone and the Exchange service tells me that I have an unread message.
Shunts...

The nokia messaging service has been updated recently as is good, I've personally had no problems. You may want to revisit if your still looking for a solution - the previous app was in beta after all.
Look to the profiles section of the E71 to set the messaging tone...

I don't think it's Mail for Exchange. I just set up the email for my POP3 account following the instructions on p37 of the user manual. It works in the way you describe, except that I get no sound.
I'm also trying Email on 3 again. I notice that if I set my mailbox to the Email on 3 mailbox (in tools>settings>general>personalization>home screen>modes>home screen applications>E-mail 1 notification>mailbox) then I get a sound when an email comes into that mailbox. However if I set it to the other mailbox, I don't get a sound.
All very strange.
Anyway, thanks for your help.

I tried Nokia messaging just the other day and I found that although it pushed my emails when I first set it up, it was unable to sync from then on.

maybe this will solve your problem if your emails get pushed to your phone than try to go to tools>modes>home screen applications then go to email notifications then choose your account you want to get a signal from after under mailbox you will find preview there you can choose what you want this worked for me i am using seven beta as my primary email program works flawless
