Make a back up
First try reset by *#7370# this one will erase all of your data, 'wipe the phone clean' and restore to factory settings. see if any of these options work and if you are able to use your phone as you like/need to.
option two u can go in for a hard reset which will turn ur device as it left the factory totally new which will be '*' '3' 'Call Key' and Power button all pressed at the same time after u have removed ur phone battery for at least 5 mins. It wud turn ur phone as it was when it left the factory
Also use ur device without the memory card and see
in case of ur memory card there are different options available to you to get rid of the corrupt/unwanted data in your card.
menu--tools--memory---options---format memory card......
remember everything including ur factory installed apps will be deleted......... but u can always download them later either from nokia or google them...
or insert ur card in any reader or laptop and check for virus and also the hidden folders.......
back to ur dealer/vendor and ask him to solve it or change ur device

First of all, don't listen to people who recommend reformatting the phone for every simple thing.
SMS and call notifications get hidden if you press "delete" on the notification. Switching them back on is buried here:
Go to Tools - Settings - General - Personalization - Home Screen - Home Screen Applications - Enabled Applications
Scroll through the list to turn specific notifications etc on or off. There should be no need to reformat.

i agree with sangjaymehta
you can bring the notification back by following the same steps he described

I agree. There's a recent proliferation of "just format it" advises. But as always, the OP should take advises with a pinch of salt.
Well, as a silver lining, perhaps the pain of formatting will force users to read their manuals. I read mine - and more on E71. Did you?

Sanjay; I have this same problem and my E71 does not have the same menu options... When I get to the Home screen it has the selection of 'Active' or 'Basic'... There is no 'Home Screen Applications' choice. Can you give me any help?
Thanks
Here is my route...
Menu-Tools-Settings-Home Screen- Then I have the option for Home Screen, Mode Settings, or Key Shortcuts. The Home Screen option has a box to choose 'Active' or 'Basic.' Nothing for Home Screen Applications.

Thanks for the tip, I'm very familiar with the manual. There is no mention of turning the notifications back on, anywhere in the manual.
I did just try to delete all of my sms from my inbox, restarted the phone and suddenly the notification returned. There must have been a corupted file in the inbox somewhere...

Just got back from a long trip. I wouldn't have guessed that corrupted messages would break notifications, so this fix is good to know. I normally never retain any messages more than a day as in older phones I would find the phone responsiveness would slow down over time.
