Hello,
I have purchased 2 weeks ago E71. My 4Gb microSD card has been corrupted for some reason : all the applications, files, pictures, etc seem to be deleted but I can derive from my PC that the files are still there because the space is still occupied (1 Gb out of 4 Gb).
I do not relly mind for the other data, by the worst thing is that I have all my 2y SMS on that card and now I have *almost* lost them... Can anyone tell me which file I should try to restore on that card (if I can), or, better, does anyone know a free software that can restore such a corrupt card (all that I can find so far is pretty expensive software).
Thank you so much for your help.
Regards,
Antoine

I know the software, I just don't remember the name. I look into that and get back to you.
The thing with the memory cards is complicated, there are plöenty of threads about that .because it seems if you use some security features it may become encrypted w/o you knowing it. Many of us have lost data because of that.
In the meantime, here's some thing I have learned about the sd cards
- I keep my messaging in the phone memory. For as long as I delete huge attachments from from messaging inbox and sent box, that won't take up much memory. (It happened with my N81 that I had to temporarily switch it to card, if I were sending e-mails with large attachments. Even then I switched immediately back to internal memory.)
- since e71 has plenty of memory, I never install anything on memory card.
- All very important data that I don't have copies of goes in the internal memory
- I use SD card to hold large bulk data: Music, podcasts, pohotos, videos, maps etc. Things that are frequently trransferred to computer and that I wouldn't miss if the card failed. I am not saying it will, but I feel more confident this way.
If I do firmware update etc, total resets or anything dramatic, I always copy the phone data to my computer, use a card reader to first copy the entire contents of the SD card even if it does not specifically say I should. Especially that little note at update that you need to check - my card is not encrypted. It may be encrypted even if you don't know it is! (If a card reader does not work, but you can copy the files using PC suite, you know it is.)

Hello tapaninyc,
thank you very much for your advices... indeed, I was used to following your advices, but I was so hapy to play with my new E71 toy that I just did not realise it could fail. That is quite disappointing by the way, having been told how stable was the E71
anyways, Nokia still has my preference!
I have found a free software that does the job of retrieving the files and keep the file names, but unfortunately:
* it creates clusters/chunks, so kills the tree structures
* I would have imagined to retrieve this tree and then just copy/paste with the hope to recover my SMS...
* but it is free and the file names are at least kept intact (not the case of all).
* It is called Drive Rescue. The link takes you to a French page, but the software is available in many languages (click on "Télécharger" to Download)
If anyone know where and how are the SMS are encrypted by Nokia E71, that would be great!! I really really would love to recover these SMS (a person who sent me these has passed away... just some memories...). Having that info, I will still need to know how to get them merged with the new SMS that I have received since on my cell memory...
Does anyone in the Nokia team has this info ?
Thanks,
Antoine
