Hi All!
I'm having problems with IMAP4 access to my company email with my Nokia E75. As part of my job I get to mess with all phone models our users have and I've seen the exact same problem on E52 and E72 too. I have not seen this problem with older models like E50, E51, E61(i), E71 and E90 so I presume that this problem has something to do with most recent nokia (messaging) software.
In a nutshell: "Updating a IMAP4 email box stops all of a sudden with no apparent reason and stays that way until I create another email box and start using that one instead".
I've done some investigating on this matter and communicated with Nokia Care multiple times but I have found no resolution for my problem. This wont be a very short message but please bear with me.
We are using a corporate dedicated GPRS accesspoint which only allows IMAP4 access to our email server for our authenticated users. I've captured the IP packets transmitted between our MS Exchange 2003 email server and a phone that has a malfunctioning email box. The packets are captured from the network border between our ISP's GPRS network and our corporate network. The TCP session for IMAP4 opens correclty but during the update procedure the phone suddently sends a TCP-FIN message which is used to terminate the connection. There is no error or anything displayed on the phone screen and everything works just like there were no new emails since something has gone wrong with the email box. The phone just says updating and disconnects almost immediately.
I've held phones that have two _exactly_ identical email boxes (credentials, email fetch amounts, signature strings, etc. - just with different email box name like "mail2" where the first box was "mail1"). One of them malfunctioned and the newly created one worked like a charm.
I'm no Nokia sw/hw expert but to me that sounds like there is enough free memory and resources for the phone to operate and the problem is most likely with the specific email box. This also kind of rules out the possibility of having some strange character in the email header/body that the messaging software would not understand because as mentioned, a newly created email box works fine with all the emails available in the inbox. If I had to guess, the problem is with indexing already feched emails or something similar as I can still download and read all the mails that arrived before the problem started. The darn thing just wont update. If I use outlook to remove some of the emails that have arrived before the problem started from my inbox, they get removed from the phone during the next update attempt but the updating still fails.
...and Yes, I've updated the phone software to the most recent one available at Nokia.com.
With my E75 the version is currently "202.12.01". I've also tried re-installing it in case something was wrong with it and tried restoring factory settings. It helps for a brief moment as I have to recreate the email box in the process but the user most likely returns to me in a month or so when the email box stops updating again.
This is rather unpleasant to investigate as the problem takes seemingly random time to reappear and I can't really be sure whether some new workaround idea worked or not before couple of months has has passed.
Has someone else experienced this and possibly found a workaround for it?
If I forgot to mention something, just ask.
kind regards
Jukka

Yes, I have experienced this a few times already with my E72. Last time was after firmware update to V.31 (Gmail stopped updating, althouh showing as connected and opening existing emails, just like you described). It is also impossible to send any email then once this problem starts.
I usually have to erase the mailbox and create the same identical box.
I thought this had to do with Nokia Messaging servers (managing the push to our phones). From your analysis it looks it's more a problem with the phone's email software.

Just updated my E75 firmware to 201.12.15.
Can't really say whether it helped yet as my email box was working fine before the update and now I'll have to wait whether the update fails.
fingers crossed...

Aw **bleep**,
just found a user with a malfunctioning email box on E75 and updated it to "210.12.15" but the damn email updating still fails. Updating the left the user settings untouched so maybe something is corrupted there and returning to factory defaults helps.
if not then it's back to the drawing board for Nokia...
Cheers

I have only experiences with e-mail on a E72.
IMHO the built-in email client has some serious issues which renders it virtually unusable. In some respects, the capabilities fall behind the predecessor. There are already many posts in this forum about it.
At the moment, I would recommend to use a 3rd party application. You will pay a licence fee but you will save a lot more in service hours. (You are not a private user I understand.)
