nokia e61 - a great idea that was never completed //*rant begins
my nokia e61 - the good -the web browser, vpn functionality, voip functionality, the keyboard, .g wireless
the bad - the web browser crashes frequently, the os is slow, the latest firmware crashes (you cant press any button or the call drops) when receiving a second call and trying to swap, voicemail indicator doesnt work, cisco voip client promised for (literally) years doesnt exist yet and will probably work, wireless signal can shows good signal (40-60%) but fails, only the latest mail for exchange works and doesnt include grouping of wireless connection groups (obvious failing) or public folders, email attachments dont work properly, voip potential is amazing but unusable for any standard user e.g. normal vpn client requires group name and password nokia client requires developmer registration, software download lots of research, undocumented settings ie no possible way of configuring (i am a cisco engineer). normal phone reception when compared to a normal mobile is poor (another nokia mobile in the same physical location will get twice the reception on the same network), settings are difficult and very complex (it took me about 2 weeks to sort out), bluetooth drivers are not properly provided or easy to install, compared to a k800i bluetooth functionality/reliability is poor, internet access from laptop via phone is complex to install/configure (on windows xp and vista), alarm clock is worse than on some of the earliest nokias (compared to sony ericcson literally years behind). nokia support was terrible i raised a call with support and it took 4 weeks for initial response. they agreed that there were problems even with v.3 of firmware then never phoned back. oh and like all nokias battery life is not great. A camera would be great. Enterprise software could easily disable this, but few people/companies want premium phones without cameras (yes i know about the e61)
other than that its fantastic (and i really do mean it - i like the phone and its potential) just disappointed that a piece of hardware that is obviously good has been let down (not necessarily by nokia developers) by nokia's need to move onto the next product before fixing the initial problems. All could be solved by some bug fixes, re-layout and simplification. Then you would have a classic phone that would sell like hot cakes for years. rant ends*//
