Updated last night from a 1.x firmware. Reset the phone and restored from backup successfully post update.
However, I have no contacts visible. It seems that the option to save contacts to the memory card has been removed (probably sensibly - it never worked very well).
Unfortunately, my contacts were saved to the memory card. This means they were not backed up by Nokia Content Copier, and they are not accessible to the contacts application. The "Copy From Memory Card" menu option displays "0 results copied".
I've basically lost my contacts unless there is some way of rescuing them from the memory card. Can anyone help me out with this?

"tells me the update is available. But, then it claims that either my firewall is preventing the download or that a connection cannot be made to the Internet."
Same here, and I know this is not the case. what's up here?

That sure is scary "near-bricking" experience. Sounds to me like Nokia DIY flashing is much in infancy. Primarily when people need their phones to be bi- or trilingual. Flashing causes linguistic amnesia.
Nokia has so much catch-up to do on DIY flashing of firmware. My mom's Sony Ericsson had this feature working flawlessly many years ago.
I'd say go to a Nokia Care Center if you can.

I confess that I was driven to attempt the DIY firmware update, after Nokia informed me that the Care Center nearest me (I live on the U.S. West Coast) is somewhere in Georgia, 3 time zones to the east of me.
And to think, Nokia wants to be #1 in the U.S. smartphone market. They've a long, long way to go. . .

I upgraded a few days ago to 300.21.012. The battery that used to last for 3-4 days, now lasts only for a day!
Is there any way to set it right?
08-Sep-2009 03:19 PM
Can't be. I'm on v300 and mine lasts slightly over 3 days very consistently.
Install the Energy Profiler and see what's sucking the juice.

Thank you riversandlakes. What is the ideal Energy Profiler reading for E71 if the battery has to last for four days?
I installed and ran Energy Profiler for around 15 minutes. There were sharp spikes (100 per cent) occasionally, but the averages were 20 per cent, 0.64 W, 170mA, 56.7 MB, 0.4k b/s, -87dBm, 3.73v. The top right shows 9.03.
Can you make out anything? Should I send you more data?

The above readings are far from normal. In standby mode with no running applications and backlight off the readings for the average current and power usage should be something like ~6-7mA and ~0.02-0.03W max.
With the backlight on the readings should be like ~47-50mA and ~0.18-0.20W max.
You can see that 170mA and 0.6W are far from normal even for the case when the backlight is on. Also the CPU usage is far from normal. You have to investigate which process is causing this.

Thank you wasilev.
How do I find out which process is causing this? Does the Energy Profiler have an option to find it? If so, where?

This is not so easy because there are lot of hidden processes, and I am not sure how can you check them. As a start, you can check the following:
1. do you see some running applications when you press and hold the Home button? If yes, try to close them one by one and see if the problem is still there.
2. check if there are active GPRS or WLAN connections. if yes, try to find which application is using them - automatic e-mail accounts etc.
3. if your bluetooth is on - turn it off
4. check if the WLAN scanning is enabled -Tools->Settings->Connection->Wireless LAN->Show WLAN availability
5. try to disable the WLAN home plugin - Tools->Settings->General->Personalisation->Home screen->Mode settings->Home screen applications->Enabled applications->Wireless LAN - if this is checked, uncheck it. I disabled this on my phone because it causes battery drain after switching the WLAN on from the home screen for the first time - even if you turn it off later, it continues to scan every 1 minute (this is clearly visible in the Energy Profiler) and the standby power usage is almost double - 0.06W instead of 0.03W.
If these things do not help, we will think again ![]()

1. the used memory is ~57mb, and without applications running it should be ~49-50mb => these ~7mb are taken by some running application.
2. the sharp spikes up to 100% of CPU usage are not normal, the average CPU usage should be ~3-4% and most of it is caused by the energy profiler itself => this also indicates that some extra application is running and doing something
What applications have you installed? Did you restore a backup after you upgraded the FW?

vvasilev,
Thank you for taking pains to reply.
The app that runs in the background usually is Shozu. But it was running even when I had the previous firmware.
Will this info help?:
After I installed the new firmware first, the phone refused to connect to the Net. In one of the forums, someone had mentioned that the old settings were sometimes not compatible with new firmwares. The advise was NOT to install the phone settings from the backup.
So I installed the firmware again, bud did not install the phone settings. Now the phone connected properly to the Net.
But now the battery problem has cropped up. Even with Shozu running, my phone's battery used to last at least four days. But now, it has dropped to just one day. Sometimes not even one day.
The Wlan search is disabled. So the spikes may be because of Shozu and Nokia email apps connecting to the Net.
Any way, I will run the test again without any background apps running (including shozu and Nokia email) and let you know the results.

My $0.02. To achieve nirvana optimal usage of juice during idle standby the Energy Profiler needs to get as as low as 0.02W or even 0.01W.
You need to spend some investigative effort on who's abusing your batt... Quite interesting ![]()

I just want to remind you to keep an open mind regarding the cause of low battery life, might be some firmware routine that is misbehaving.
I suddenly started to have 1W spikes every 45s and the battery lasted one day. Turned out that it started after I added a WLAN access point.
