Nokia E70 and STUN support

Any news on this yet ? The nokia FAQ still has :-

"STUN support is expected to become available during 2006, and TURN and ICE during 2007."

As far as I can tell, there still isn't any STUN support for the E70 :-(

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

I got e70 i travelled on hotspot in airport but i can't work my voip by Noverca. May be a NAT problem that Nokia e70 don't support. I'm waiting new Nokia release. I'm very angry with Nokia, I paied a product a lot of money but doesn't work.
I'm waiting too, too much.

Beginning to think that your decision is one in order not to contrast the carriers mobile, but not forgotten your customers that they could it are not satisfied .
Thank and reguards

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

I've just received this from Nokia :-

-----
With regard to your email concerning NAT traversal on the E70, please note that it is no longer intended to offer NAT traversal on E70 and STUN support will not be available on this handset. The FAQ on the Nokia website has been updated accordingly.
-----

Sure enough, the FAQ has been updated :-

-----
Q: Does my Nokia device support voice over IP (VoIP)?

A:

Yes, your Nokia device support VoIP telephony based on the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). This means that the service has to be based on the same technology standard.
Please consult your VoIP service provider for more information about compatibility.

In the first phase, your Nokia device has been designed to be used with a SIP based VoIP server which resides on the same side of the firewall as the phone, for example inside company premises.

Mobile VoIP telephony is unique compared to the fixed VoIP telephony, because users expect to be able to use their mobile phones in multiple different WLAN locations, such as the office, home or WLAN hotspots. Hence the IP phone call should be able to cross different kinds of firewalls on its way to the server. In order to be able to do this, a method called Network Address Translation (NAT) is needed to translate different IP addresses on different sides of the firewall. Your Nokia devices do not support NAT traversal, a technique to enable the crossing of the firewall.

Your Nokia device support compatible enterprise voice solutions from Avaya and Cisco which operate inside the company firewall and hence do not require NAT traversal.

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

Bad news....

But: Look at the FAQ page of the E61... I remember the last firmware including the STUN feature, but in the FAQ you're also told there is none?

What do you think?

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

I had a lot of consideration for Nokia until they announced the release for STUN support with the version 3 of the firmware for E70 (expected for end 2006). Now, 2007 still no STUN support and probably it won't released. A dirty trick to convince customers like me to buy their phones. They have lost my consideration. Never buy a phone again without STUN support!!!

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

Has anyone heard any further info about the implementation of STUN support for E70? I do not have the choice of returning this phone now...am beyond the retailer's one month return policy. Do I have any way to get compensated for being a victim of misinformation and false advertisement? I wrote to Nokia but they did not specifically say that they have discontinued the development a firmware upgrade that would address the NAT traversal issue. I am not sure if I should give up hope and purchase some other wifi enabled handset. Any advice?

It really depends on where you are and if you are really prepared to fight. Your local law decide what sort of consumer right you have. Local consumer right did not warrant a full refund after purchase, but I got it.

In my case, consumer rights is not well protected in Hong Kong. I prepared to go to court if things are not settled. If you have that determination and showing sign of doing it, then the next factor is luck. One of the sign of your determination is you document everything. Nokia Hong Kong never wrote a word to me, not to answer my letter. So for every important step, I wrote a letter to Nokia to document what Nokia agreed or not agreed. In common legal practice, if Nokia did not object my letter, by saying my letter was wrong, then that can be a useful documentation about the conversation between me and Nokia. In the end, I forced Nokia to sign on my letter.

I think Nokia dont like the idea of being sued, even for a few thousand HK$ for a bad product they sell.

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

I hope that this is not true. I bought the phone with the full expectation that I would be able to use VOIP at ANY location using my mobile data or using a Wifi Zone. I love this phone, but it's not complete without VOIP. I would NEVER buy another Nokia again if this turns out to be true and I would rubish it at every chance I get. I hope Nokia are listening. I want STUN. Now I'm beginning to sound like a spoilt brat. I don;t care. I bought this phone for email and VOIP and the same functionality of an E61.

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

Who can tell whether that is true or not?

I complaints to Consumer Council for Nokia giving mis-information to trick me into buying the E70. Today Nokia Hong Kong only support firmware 1.x and yet they put up big advertisement selling e-series phone. That is what I called reckless and shameless. When I have chance, I shared my experience with others.

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

Are you trying to use your own (or your company's) SIP server? I've used VoIP on an E70 so there is at least one third-party VoIP provider that doesn't require STUN.

Now if I could just remember their name...

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

I have been able to use E70 with Truphone (www.truphone.com) but with none of the other SIP providers like Gizmo Project, Voxalot etc. The blog Gigaom has also written critical comments on this subject. It will be very disappointing to see Nokia turning its back on its promises.

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

Now the situation is interesting - new firmware is out, but there is not much changed in SIP settings menu etc.

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

As stated here, we HAVE the STUN support now, but this is "Nokia-way" to implement this: add it to new firmware version WITHOUT user interface and additionally with packet data use disabled as default - and this setting is also without user interface.

Result? If I could do VoIP calls over 3G data transfer before, then now the whole application is rendered almost useless, because:

1. STUN settings cannot be applied (which makes impossible to use almost any WLAN)
2. Usage of packet data transfer is disabled by default and there's also no way for user to change it (which, of course, makes 3G/GPRS impossible to use).

And all information you can find on this thing is some kind of **bleep**py "webinar" - a WMV file, which includes some kind of Powerpoint-like presentation and some guy talking behind the screen with voice quality of a phonecall.

I have to admit that I had never been so **bleep** off @Nokia as I am now - even after 8 years of using their products.

Re: Nokia E70 and STUN support

Do I understand you correctly? Nokia have updated the firmware on the E70 and actually reduced the functionality of VOIP?
