My brand new E71 and my disappointments, please help

Hello,

I just purchased a brand new E71, the US version. I've been playing with it the past few days and I'm not very happy with it. I primarily bought the phone for e-mail/WEB, GPS & maps. However, I'm seeing the following issues:

1- My first and foremost problem is the GPS lock times. No matter where I am, downtown Boston with a lot of buildings, or suburban Massachusetts with no buildings around and clear view of the sky in all directions, E71 takes a long time (5+ minutes) to get the first position. I find this simply unacceptable. Are there any other e71 users out here? What are your experiences? Are there any settings that I need to change (positioning server, etc)? In the settings, currently all the GPS positioning methods are enabled, including AGPS. But even without AGPS, shouldn't I be getting a lock quickly if I don't have any obstructions in the sky (tall buildings, etc)? My experience with iPhone GPS has been so much better.

2- WLAN connections appear to be very slow during web surfing. Again my comparison is with an iPhone. I've tried connecting an iPhone and E71 to the same WLAN network and load up a few web pages. There was no comparison, the iPhone killed my E71 in all cases :smileysad: This was very disappointing. Is there a web page or an application that can help me measure my phones download/upload speed in my WLAN at home?

I have not been able to get past the above two issues during the past week and I'd appreciate help and advice. I had high hopes for this device (been a Nokia fan for 15+ years now), but I'll have to return this if I can't get past these issues.

Sincerely

Are you using the E71-2? there are reports about weak signal. if so, if you can change it to E71-1 then it may solve the GPS lock time and slow browsing. I personally do not have this problem, im from APAC and uisng E71-1

Yes I'm using E71-2, which is the US version. Are you saying all US customers of E71 have an inferior version?

I too have E71-1 live in APAC too with none of the abovementiond problems. I dont however think the -2 verson is inferior. its just better suited for 3G in the americas. sugest you get it replaced OR check with other -2 users in the US

I have the same problem with my USA E71-2. VERY slow- and most of the menu items dont work at all. And it self-configured for POP, not IMAP4.

Save for a square "target" the screen stays dark when in Camera mode, if it comes on at all. The phone has also shut itself down twice after just one one day of use.

Could my E71 be a Lemon? Is there a fix?

Re: My brand new E71 and my disappointments, please help

I just couldn't take it anymore and I returned my E71.

I went to a local mall where there is an Apple store, found an iPhone and turned it off. Then I turned the iPhone and my E71 both at the same time.

I first went to the maps application on both phones. To be fair, I tried both nokia maps and google maps for symbian on E71. The iPhone took about 7 seconds to precisely locate my position. E71 took about 5 minutes, and at the end of 5 minutes I gave up.

Next, I turned off both devices and turned them back on, and attempted to visit si.com (wanted a bandwidth intensive page). There was no comparison between the iPhone and my E71. My e71 didn't even start displaying anything when iPhone had the whole page up.

Also, my E71 was freezing up occasionally when applications are starting up (especially nokia maps)...

So disappointed. I'm wondering whether I should order another E71-2 or just go with some other phone...

Re: My brand new E71 and my disappointments, please help

I have the e71-2 and i am using it in toronto. I have the exact opposite experience with mine. Phone is very fast and very stable. Do you have a data plan and are you using the correct access point?

For gps i have mine set to assisted and integrated and the server is supl.nokia.com. In the positioning server fields make sure you have it set to the correct access point.

The first thing i would do is remove the memory card and hard reset the phone by pressing *#7370#. Once the phone is set up again, dont install any 3rd party apps except for google maps. You have to run nokia maps until it gets a lock on your position and starts to download some of the map area you are in. Let it download a couple of hundred kb, then exit the program. Connect it to your computer in usb mode, then open the maploader application. Use the application to download the map of your state. Once it is fully downloaded disconnect and restart the nokia maps program. Make sure to check the settings in the maps app to make sure it can access the correct access point. You will find that it locks much quicker if you are not moving when getting an initial lock. Same goes for google maps. Google maps usually locks in very fast.

You should also make sure that you have a newer sim card when using 3g. They are supposed to work better than the old sims. If all of this stuff does not work the you either have a 3rd party app that is causing a problem or you have a lemon that should be exchanged

Sorry to hear of your plight. I'm unfamilier with the US version, however my UK e71 way out performs the iphone on all fronts except of course apps. Locatings gps is in an instant, around 4 to 5 seconds and as for web surfing its very fast. The iphone is fairly quick also but can''t keep up with the nokia. Hope you get it sorted.

Re: My brand new E71 and my disappointments, please help

I have an E71-2, and I can tell you two things.

1) The GPS in this device is very unstable.  In fact, mine never worked, but I bought this phone in US and I live in Venezuela, so try to send it to warranty exchange is a little expensive (and/or time-consuming).  I prefer to buy a $40 external GPS, has better reception than ANY internal GPS in any phone, and works in the E71 and in my laptop :smileyhappy: I know it's a matter of taste, some people prefer to have the GPS in-device, but I see that the integrated GPS in any phone is worse than any external GPS.  I compared mine with the external GPS against an E71 side-to-side, and the difference was: mine: 9-10 satellites locked, the E71 using internal GPS: 6.Precision in mine was 8 meters (CLEP at 90%) while internal GPS was 20-30 meters (Nokia doesn't inform about the CLEP)

2) The WLAN issues could be solved via a firmware update.  I remember I had the 110 version and is not as stable as now (I'm still using the 210 version).  I tested against a BB Pearl and the difference is incredible... The BB is still connecting to RIM's server, while my E71 is already playing a video via Flash Lite 3.

Concluding: do a firmware update.  The GPS? Forget it... or buy a external inexpensive GPS, you will note the difference :smileyhappy:

With Garmin Mobile XT GPS on my E71 worked flawlessly. Made it a point not to use the AGPS :smileywink:

Lock takes around a minute or so here.

E71! Lovin' It! :smileyvery-happy:

Re: My brand new E71 and my disappointments, please help

FINALLY!!!! I FOUND THE SOLUTION FOR THE GPS ISSUE!!! its a trick, but work.

I´ll explain, but my E71 it´s in spanish, sorry if the translation of the menu it is not like the english:

-dont´t activate AGPS neither GPS by NET

-go in MENU- GPS, launch the GPS DATA, enter to NAVIGATION, and here go to POSITION sheet (use navigation key to tje right)

-when the aplication show the position in latitude and longitude numbers push HOME or MENU key. please do not close the aplication, just go to menu!

-then go to again to GPS and launch MAPS. the satelite would be already conetctet.

i try so many times and work perfetc!

so i still have problems to enter to the gmail mobile page whit the WLAN, i put my user and keywork and the dispaly go white and freeze!!, please help!!
