Internet access points on E71

I've set my internet to connect to my WLAN, so that when I'm at home I can surf the internet etc without using my 3G. Can anyone tell me if I can set my phone up to connect via 3G when i'm away from home and the WLAN is unavailable? There doesn't seem to be a setting for a secondary connection point, only a default one.

Re: Internet access points on E71

I have my E71 to always ask so i can make the choice of how to connect but it would be nice for the phone to do it automatically.

Smartconnect from Birdstep. Free license for the Nokia E-series. It was installed on my phone by default, but you can get it from here as well:

Re: Internet access points on E71

thanks, that does work and connects to WLAN in the morning when i turn my phone on, then switches to 3G when I leave. the problem now is that it does not automatically switch back to WLAN when i get home. is there some way of setting this? or another application that does this?

Re: Internet access points on E71

Ah, i haven't got back home yet so i dont know if mine will also do that. Ill post later.

One thing i did notice is that when im at home and i check my email, although it does connect to my WiFi as thats set as the first option i also see the mobile web icon (top left) come on. Ive checked for data usage and the data count isn't going up by much but im a bit worried about why its coming on.

Make sure that you have "Disconnect on better connection" turned on. This causes SmartConnect to drop the cellular data connection when it senses WiFi and then your application will typically reconnect and this time go through wifi.

This may take a few minutes - didn't work at all for me in an older release.

If you're impatient, hold down the telephone disconnect button whilst on the home screen, and the phone will kill the cellular data connection immediately.

Also make sure that the access group has various access points in the order of priority that you want.

Works  well with mail clients, the web browser and so on. Does not work at all with the VPN client.

Re: Internet access points on E71

Just wanted to report back that mine worked fine when i got home last night.

I already had disconnect set so maybe this was why.

Still not sure why the mobile web icon comes on when im at home but it doesn't seem to be downloading anything.
