I am starting this thread because having searched extensively on this site and every other (europe, asis, australia ect) I cannot find an answer that works.
I bought my Nokia back in December 2008. It worked fine and I boasted on friends with blackberries. FFWD to about June 2009 when the phone began freezing when I tried to access my media files. I therefore went and upgraded to Firmware 200.21.118 and that's where hell started. The phone cannot be shut off because the red power button does not respond to touch, and if it does, it just reboots the phone even if I am just trying to change the profiles. Then I am now charging the battery every evening, up from every week. I suspect that the new firmware fried my battery and the circuit board.
I consulted the various discussion boards, emailed Nokia Caribbean (I am in Jamaica, but I bought the US unlocked version) and Nokia USA, and the instructions they gave did not help. I restored factory settings, hard reset the phone, everything but the problem still exists. Now my next move is to take it to a dealer but I am doubtful because I do not trust front office people.
So how do I fix my phone? Have I lost my hard earned $$$ going Nokia E71 (and not the BB Bold)? I am really disgusted with Nokia to say the least. This is my first smart phone and I trusted Nokia over every other manufacturer, only to be rewarded with this.

*bump* sorry to do this, but the problem hasn't been solved.
to add to the topic, I have even more issues. I had XP and was using both NUS and PC Suite and both of them failed to find my phone. Well, it would at the beginning, but then suddenly it would refuse to find it. So I've never updated from 200.21.118 .
now, I'm using Vista, and downloaded NOS(Nokia Ovi Suite), made a backup downloaded the update, and when started installing new firmware, the NOS would say that my phone is disconnected, and then after like 10 sec, it would find it again. Windows itself does not make a sound of connected/disconnected sound, so I'm concluding it's NOS problem. BTW, I was leaving phone for extensive period of time connected like that, thinking maybe it's restarting or something. but no, that does not help.
Now, after reading different tips i've tried hard reset, then removing the memory card, setting up PC suite mode only....
IT DOES NOT BLOODY HELP!!!
Now nor NOS, nor NUS does not find the phone(nor in mass storage nor in PC suite modes)
I do not have a place where I could use XP or Win 7. BTW, I've tried changing compatibility mode on NOS(right click on icon/properties/Compatibility/Compatibility mode/Run this program in compatibility mode for win XP SP2.
still does not help.
so, first of all, how do I get any Nokia's software find my phone again
and second, how do I make firmware update?
P.S. I was experiencing the same problem like OP.
