Simply you cannot do it.

When you switch off the unit you cannot access anything the unit is completely off. It is not like the 9500/9300.

You could put the phone into offline mode, this will stop all communications but still allow access to all other features, good on planes.

By switching off the phone did you actually mean by hanging up, or completely power off? Perhaps you wanted it in offline mode like previously suggested.

Yep, this is what I do during flights also because is the only way to access PDA functions. Probably it is not the idea of the request, since 9300/9500 still have the off line mode, too.
