E90 - :( Official answer to our complaints... :(

I just had a phone call with our Nookia support !

No possibility to get any information about a "new E90 generation" production or existance !
Neither an aknowledgement of the recurrent problems we discovered ! Seems we do not exist, or we are the few only one having discovered problems with this E90 !

The only solution they propose is :
- Go to a Nokia care center.
- Ask for a technical review
- Get a report
- Contact Nokia back
- Wait and pray for accepting an exchange !

Resulting in :
- Having paid 899 € for a phone (3 to 4 times the cost of another mobile !!!)
- Having to wait between E90 sent back to Nokia and received back from Nokia
- Having to reconfigure and reinstall all the stuff.
- Pray to get THE new "bugfixed" release one if any !

I also asked them if, in the case they discover REAL problems with a specific serie, if they would post a tool like for the bad batteries... based on the IMEI

The answer was typically the one of a politician ...
And I'm still waiting for it, or at least trying to understand what he tried to tell or NOT to tell me !

Bref, I stayed 15 minutes at the phone for NOTHING !
Calling that service has the only one advantage : if you have nothing to do, you will be occupied !

Re: E90 - :( Official answer to our complaints... :(

I spoke to various Vodacom (South Africa )outlets this week as well as some Nokia people about the "re-release" of the E90. None could commit to a date, but all did admit there are production/technical problems on the E90 and these are being attended to by Nokia.

All these problems mentioned on this and other sites aside, I have funnily enough seen a number of people walking around and using E90's in public and when asked, they were quite happy with their E90's and actually quite unaware of the fuss been made on various sites like this one. Quite opposite to the people here. I suppose if you are happy with the E90 you would not be visitng these sites in the first place. Also for HTC supporters, I have come many unhappy users of late.

Not all the E90's users are unsatisfied. I am really happy of my E90, I had and have a 9300, too. Btw I underlined some little issues (felt so by me) but in general the E90 is a great handset.
Today I had and tried a HTC TyTn II..well nice device but the low resolution and the keyboard do not fulfill my needs. Materials used do not convince me, I hold tight my E90.

Re: E90 - :( Official answer to our complaints... :(

I've had the Nokia 9210, 9300, 6670 (which led me to the E90 with S60 3Ed) and have had my E90 for about two weeks now.

Apart from one or or minor issues (such as the keyboard touching the inner screen) I am very happy with the E90. I use it intensively for taking notes in meetings, all my appointments, GMail on the run, browsing while away from office PC (new browser is a big improvement and I am not needing to use Mini Opera anymore), etc. I have take it with as backup to my DSLR camera and even recorded the GPS coordinates in the field with it for the photos I have taken. I have installed about 30 apps on and uninstalled many of them as well.

My best phone yet! The phone has drawn admiring comments in just about half of all the meetings I have attended in the last two weeks - from senior IT management to IT consultants. It is certainly a noticeable phone.....

IM sorry, But I disagree. I have been using forums such as this and my-symbian for many years because I am a very happy and avid user of communicators. I also do the same for my other interests in cars and watches etc. this for me is actually the first time I am disapointed in a communicator and I go here to see if there are views or suggestions on ways to improve the experience. I wonder if I belong to the majority? maybe its time for another poll.

I actually did an informal poll on the acceptance of the E90 in this site.

Pretty close to the mark with me as well. I played with an HTC yesterday. It was nice, feature wise but I did not like the feel of it. I am sure HTC will address this in the next version. I might just have to get one of these as a plaything. :smileyhappy:

@Jafores,

I also agree with danie_2. Here in Finland, I have come across many happy, happy users of the E90. They all say pretty much the same thing: "finally Nokia did not include the fax", and "wow is this thing fast". I did a demo for the Embassy staff and they were impressed. Considering that there is Blackberry support for the E90, they are considering this as a communications platform for the upper level staff.

I have also come across a few here that have not been happy with the E90 but for different reasons than those posted here. The main gripe is the 2.5mm plug, the **bleep**-tastic headphones, and a few other little things. Many people are convinced that Nokia will fix the problems that are current but do not consider them show stoppers. I think, and this is my opinion, this is the by-product of a more mature market. The users that are happy do not mind purchasing software to meet their particular needs, but then again Finland usually leads the way in these things.

please explain the statement re the fax, your coleages were happy it was excluded?

I too am hoping the the FW updates will take care of most of my issues, if what i have read is correct, quick office 4.5 and maybe better sms and search functionalities would be a great step forward. although i am not as happy as could be i have decided to give the e90 atleast 2 fw upgrades to see if i can live with it.

BTW one other issue for me is how i feel the phone slows down in processing tasks when a SMS or phone call is comming in. I remember the old communicators also got more efficient in (multitasking)as the FW got upgraded. I dont really mind buying 3rd party SW but i wish it were better integrated when installed. ie I got sms chat for the e90 but it was very difficult and cumbersome to to use. i wish it could be better integrated to the orig messaging system. also smart profiles and simillar apps seemed to work better in the S80 commis.

Re: E90 - :( Official answer to our complaints... :(

@Jafores,

Mainly they felt it was a dead application that took up space. I can only speak for what they say, but they felt that the fax was a waste. Could be right, could be wrong, but I know that when I had my Communicator, I could count the number of times I used the fax on one hand, but I used email all the time.

As for the app integration, you are correct. Many apps work well but there are some that are simply a pain to use. Example, LCG Jukebox. It is a webcast streamer for Internet radio. Pretty simple idea right? Wrong. It works ok but is a nightmare to use. To get station set up required a degree from NASA. I have written them about this and they got annoyed saying that I do not have to use their product. Crazy huh?

Okay, but LCG Juke box enhances audio quality, boosts up the bass and fills in the richness. The internet radio doesnt bother me as well.

Re: E90 - :( Official answer to our complaints... :(

Forgot to post this:

Open up your device
By default, the E90 and other modern Series 60 smartphones come 'locked down' in terms of the applications they'll accept, installing only those that have large companies behind them, able to afford the expensive 'signing' process. But there are hundreds of other great applications, many of them free, that are 'unsigned' ('self-signed') (although under S60 3rd Edition, totally unsigned applications are slightly restricted in what they can do). Don't worry about this (see my malware article to put your mind at rest). Just go to 'Settings | Applications | App manager' and set 'Software installation' to "All". and 'Online certif check' to "Off". You can now install any compatible program without being blocked by spurious security warnings!
Use those shortcuts!
As befits a communicator with a proper keyboard, Nokia have outfitted the E90 with lots of shortcuts, although it still falls a bit short of those in its full (Series 80-driven) 9500 predecessor. Here are a few of my favourites, some obvious (as they're similar to those in non-keyboard S60 devices) and some not so obvious:
In any text-entry application or dialog, Ctrl-C copies highlighted text, Ctrl-X cuts it and Ctrl-V pastes it, just as in any desktop application.
In Web, '8' brings up the mini-Map, '1' gives you bookmarks, '5' switches windows.
At any point in the E90, you can:
cycle between running programs, Windows-style, by holding down 'Chr' and pressing 'Tab' until you get to the app you want
use 'Chr'-'p' to switch Profiles

In Gallery/Images, '3' rotates images, '*' toggles full-screen on/off, while '5' zooms in and '0' zooms out.
In Gallery/Video clips, '2' toggles full-screen playback and navigator-up fast forwards within a clip.
In Calendar, '#' takes you to 'Today, though watch out that the current firmware has a bug that doesn't update the right hand information pane.
There are plenty more shortcuts to find and enjoy (and don't forget the row of dedicated application buttons beneath the screen, they're easy to overlook if you've come from another S60 device!), even in third party applications (see the next item), though it's hard to remember them all - the ones above should save you the most time.
A better Office
The E90 comes with a stable but fairly old and un-optimised-for-the-E90 version of Quickoffice (v3.85). I strongly recommend paying the extra and doing the upgrade to the latest v4.5. It's better in all departments, it's faster, it's more compatible with more files, and, best of all, it has loads of extra keyboard shortcuts for the E90, designed to make old Nokia 9500 users feel at home, mimicking many of the key combinations of the office apps under Series 80 on the 9300 and 9500.
Levelling up
Many E90s have uneven rubber feet fitted, seemingly. If yours 'wobbles', experiment with shaving down or even removing the 'tallest' foot. Worked wonders with my device!
Pump up the brightness (1)
The default themes that ship with the Nokia E90 are mainly dark and boring. Maybe they 'fit' the idea of a business device, but you'd be a lot better served with a simply bright and white theme, such as this one: white_revisited_13.sis (sorry, no idea where it came from now!) More contrast and a much simpler and less distracting display!

I am wondering, are you sure no one is happy with his E90?
So let me tell you, I am!
And, I had before 9300i, 9300, 9500, 9210i, 9100.
Still I love the E90.

More then that, In my work place we have 47 unit of E90 ready to deleiver.
We got 50 from Nokia last Saturday.
