E72 can't check email over wifi?

I set up my E72 to sync with my gmail account, and it all works well *except* for the fact that the phone insists on checking email by opening a 3g data connection, rather than connecting via a wifi network (even though I can browse the web etc using my home wifi connection).  This is rather annoying, as I currently don't have a good data plan, and will be especially frustrating when travelling abroad.  I even tried deleting the 3g connection from the internet and WAP access points in the  settings>connection>destinations menu, but no joy.

Anyone had any luck in setting up the phone to check email over wifi? More generally, is it possible to have the phone always check for a wifi connection beforeopeningup a 3g data connection?  Opening up Maps also seems to automaticallytransfer data over 3g without giving the option to connect to wifi network.

THanks!

BTW, for each mailbox you have, you have to go into the settings of each one, then additional settings..

for the incoming and outgoing, u have to set the connection to user defined, then choose the wifi instead of the 3g.. do this for outgoing too and it should work..

I've actually got the opposite problem - have setup as per above from Kevlar but won't work on 3G - always prompts for WLAN so only works in the office or at home - kind of defeats the purpose!!

Re: E72 can't check email over wifi?

The connection options for emails aren't the same as for internet etc. in that it doesn't let you select one of the "Destinations" predefined in Settings - Connection

The email connection settings ask for a specific connection - which means it's either network (3G/GPRS) or WiFi...

The E71 had a programme preinstalled called SmartConnect, which allowed you to set groups for connections like this, I'm not sure if there's any other software for it,but if you can find SmartConnect, that should allow you to set a new group as your email connection method and resolve your issue...

That was a bit long winded... Sorry :smileytongue:

Re: E72 can't check email over wifi?

THanks for the info!  Will have a look for this SmartConnect programme, sounds like may be just the ticket.  The Internet connection settings are really a jumble on this phone, think Nokia needs to do some serious work!

My next project is trying to get the Calendar to sync with Google Calendar, but I think that's a topic for a different thread!

don't need to install smartconnect, the application with the same functionality is already there in e72. Go to ctrl panel->setting->connection->destination->internet->set your   access point priority by go to option-> organise->change priority. then your email app choose wich ap to use depending on the priority setting.

You should set it to "Always ask" instead of "User defined". This way it will always ask what Internet connection to use and you can choose WLAN or 3G. My E72 works this way perfectly, both on WLAN and 3G.

The option to use the "Destinations" isn't there for email, it asks for a specific connection. That's why I suggesed SmartConnect.

Re: E72 can't check email over wifi?

The ridiculous thing about this issue is that the same Nokia Messaging lets me define a Destination as Access Point for my Mail for Exchange email while it doesn't let me do so for my Gmail (IMAP) account. Isn't there some 3rd party app emulating an Access Point from a list of user-defined access points ? (I guess this is what SmartConnect was doing, right ?)

where is easy Wlan

is there an option for easy wlan in e72? i set up my email and i cant seem to find the easy wlan option unlike the e71. it only gives me the list of my access points i have registerd. every time i have to check my email using wifi i have to go to settings and change the connection. is there a way i can install the easy wlan feature so i dont have to go to settings every time i have a new wifi connection?

vmoisa, can you show the steps to get to the option of 'always ask'? the options in my email settings strictly requires a choice of a definite access point, there isn't an option of 'always ask' for me, unless i'm setting it up the wrong way, which will be why i'm asking. :smileyhappy:

Re: E72 can't check email over wifi?

well, i do not know, which is why i'm asking. but control panel can be accessed through the menu. email settings-wise, i always open up the email account and access options from there, and thereon to settings. the selection of 'always ask' is the matter that i do not know.

back to the threadstarter's issue, i've just found out as well that the email does not work with my home wifi. whenever i try to connect and update, it will always disconnect itself. this is getting worrying, because whenever i need to check my email, i'll have to use the gprs connection, which is impractical when i have access to good wifi hotspots.

can anyone from nokia help clear up this issue?

E-mail -> Settings -> select a mailbox -> Mailbox settings -> Advanced mail. settings -> Incoming email settings -> Access point in use. My E72 has there two options: "Always ask" or "User defined". E72-1, FW: 021.024

Re: E72 can't check email over wifi?

getting frustrated already,  my e72 i configure hotmail every time i want to acess my email using different access pont i have to go to define an access pont and select that to email settings. i tried different email acount i used my yahoo email and gave me the menu E-mail -> Settings -> select a mailbox -> Mailbox settings -> Advanced mail. settings -> Incoming email settings -> Access point in use. My E72 has there two options: "Always ask" or "User defined". but hotmail you cant see the user defined. i think hotmail use different settings. hope nokia can fix this problem. use the same phone model and firm ware.

Re: E72 can't check email over wifi?

thank you vmoisa, however, my menu path is as such:

E-mail -> Settings -> select a mailbox -> Mailbox settings -> Advanced mail. settings -> (2 options here: Port/Secure connection) Port -> 2 options are Default and User Defined. there isn't an option for 'always ask' in this.

i'd further emailed nokia regarding this (re: coxchua) and this is their reply:

"For clarification on your concern, if you wish to synchronize your emails using Nokia Messaging. You will still use the GPRS or Packet data connection because it is restricted by the network provider."

so this is pre-determined, not much we can do about it.

when i called up nokia careline, their reply was pretty much the same. however, they told me that if i want to use the mail service using my home wifi, i'll have to go into offline mode, disabling the entire telco service, before i can do so.

therefore vmoisa, pardon the excessive questioning, which mail are you using that allows this settings?

i share the same frustration with coxchua though, if we have perfectly good networks to tap into, why are we forced into using the data service plan?

I am using a mail of "Other" type (last option in the list where you can choose Ovi Mail, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, etc...). This means that I have done all the settings manually.

What type of Mail account are you using ? Why not enter the settings manually instead of automatically ? I think you can find on this forum or on the Internet the settings for Yahoo and Gmail....
