E72 Email Question

I recently got a e72 and configured my ISP mail on it
my email is working and I am able to send/receive however e72 did not ask me anything about 'push mail'
so it my account working through push mail or not ?
I did not make any account or signed up for any push mail service at Nokia website? does it just work directly?

frankly I don't see any difference, the mail worked in similar way when I had a phone which did not have 'push mail'

and what is nokia messaging ? do I need to setup some account at http://email.nokia.com/ ? what will be the benefit of doing so ?

Re: E72 Email Question

The default e-mail app has no push functions. You can register for an account with Nokia Messaging that has push capabilities but there are still may issues with NM as you can see on the messaging, e-mail and browsing board on this forum.

Re: E72 Email Question

Now this is more confusing , when had created the account at phone I got an email

"Thank you for activating your Nokia Messaging account! With this service, you can enjoy automatic delivery of your personal emails to your Nokia phone."

"The purchase of your Nokia phone includes a subscription to Nokia Messaging"

whereas in phone, I had just put in my old email address, I did not sugn-up for "Nokia Messaging"

In Account Info of my email I can see the serveraddress appear as netac.vie.hosting.nokia.com

so It appears that Nokia Messaging is in use but I don't see any difference in mail sending/receving and can't understand that what is the 'push mail' all about

Re: E72 Email Question

"Push mail" effectively means that your phone receives new emails more or less instantly, rather than after checking at regular intervals. Even though yout settings might say that you're checking every 30 mins or so, as long as you have your account coupled to Nokia messaging (which it appears you have), it's "constantly checking", or at least keeping in touch with the server. You should make sure in this case that you have an unlimited data plan.

Thanks, I can understand it now

my settings say that "sync after every 1 day" however I do get emails delivered  within 5-10 minutes of sending them

but still I would not call it PUSH, shouldn't the delivery be instant in case of PUSH mail ? lag of 5-10 minutes is not instanant

Previouslt I had Nokia 5700 and I had set the check interval to 15 minutes and that is why for me there is no difference between e72 push mail or normal mail. other than the fact that mail is now being throttled through Nokia Servers

One more useless hop, I would say

Re: E72 Email Question

Hi,

Nokia E72 is phone which has Free Style E-Mailing i.e.., you can configure Mail for Exchange, Nokia Messaging & the native mail account in one application. When you configure a mailbox in the handset, it would not prompt you to select Push/Pull Mail service. Instead in Nokia S60 3rd Edition phones it gives an option to select Nokia Email Service (Pull Mail), Nokia Messaging Service (Push Mail) & Mail for Exchange (Push Mail & Corporate Mail).

You don't require to login to http://email.nokia.com To setup an account. You can directly login to the service by entering you email credentials in the handset application. As the Nokia Messaging Service would recognize majority of email server settings. Nokia Messaging is a service which is running in trial in a few countries & collaborated with a few Network Providers, requiring users to subscribe for the service at a additional cost.

Re: E72 Email Question

Or to put it another way, the E72 has a set up wizard where you simply put in the email address you want to configure and it will try and auto configure it.

If that email address is supported by Nokia Messaging (the service at email.nokia.com), it will take you off to sign up for NM.

If that email address is not supported by Nokia Messaging, it will get you to manually configure the account.

Nokia Messaging is a push email service in so much that it gathers your mail for you and pushes that mail to the phone. However it is not instant in my experience, but it's push effectively because the phone does not poll for the mail.

It actually works through an IMAP Idle system where the phone connects to the server and waits to be told there is mail. The result is there is very little data used in checking for mail except for a small heartbeat message to keep the IMAP connection alive.

Be aware that NM is an always on service. This does have some impact on battery life. You may actually find that a 2G/3G connection is better for battery than WLAN. And yes, most if not all push email has to have a constant connection, as there's no universal network support for pushing email without a connection.

If the mail is manually configured on your phone you should still be able to get push email if you connect to a server that is IMAP based and supports IMAP Idle. However there's a bug in the E72 which means IMAP Idle on manual connections does not work so there's a lot of data being transferred all the time. In which case you are best off configuring it to connect every 5, 10 minutes etc.

In practice, I get my mail quicker through a manual configuration polling every 5 minutes than I do with Nokia Messaging which has an always on connection.

Nokia Messaging however is preferable for me as it has the lowest amount of data use. Downside is it's unreliable and the service often stops working.

Re: E72 Email Question

[ Edited ]

Wow, this thread is quiet informative.  But I still have some questions regarding Nokia Messaging.

a)

You mentioned that some email addresses are automatically supported by Nokia Messaging (eg. Yahoo Mail, GMail), so I had to sign up first for NM before I can configure the Yahoo Mail and GMail onto my E72.

Regarding the E72 email setup wizard, at first since I didn't want to incur any data charges (there isn't exactly affordable data plans in our country [per kilobyte charging or per 15-minute charging only] except the most expensive plans for our Telecom service providers), I had a hard time making Nokia Messaging to work if I didn't use packet data (I was using my home's wireless LAN / DSL connection if connecting to the Internet).  Couldn't successfully configure the Nokia Messaging, it keeps on going back to the starting step.

After doing it from the Internet (had to sign up for an Ovi account too), then the phone will connect via packet data (doesn't seem to work via WLAN), finally had emails configured on the E72.

b)

Anyway, pardon me for digressing. You mentioned "always on" service.

Is Yahoomail and Gmail set up in the E72 an "always on" service?

Also you mentioned "IMAP Idle".  How does one find out that "IMAP Idle" isn't working and that a lot of data is being transferred -- I mean, is this viewable from the Connection Manager or Data Log of the E72 if the NM is doing it?

c)

There's mention of Mail for Exchange -- I'm wondering what is "Mail for Exchange" -- are these only for companies that have their own mail servers? (since I don't work in a company with its own mail server)  I'm curious about this because there are some mentions of using Mail for Exchange with Gmail (I thought GMail is automatically supported Nokia Messaging; is there some difference if it's configured by a "Mail for Exchange"?)

Re: E72 Email Question

Yahoo and Gmail will be "always on" if you set it up with Nokia Messaging (it will do that by default). You can reject the terms and conditions and I think it will then let you set it up manually, or alternatively you can manually configure them via POP3 or IMAP settings (under 'Other').

The annoying thing seems to be as you say the wizard requires a connection to set up an account. Even setting up an account manually! It only needs it so it can check with NM if it's a supported account.

The always on service uses little data though just waiting for mail. It will use more when you receive mail so how much it costs depends on how much mail you receive.

As for the IMAP Idle not working, you can see this via the Data Log. Just keep a note of what the current data use is, and once the mailbox is enabled on the phone you should be able to see what's happening. If you compare that to a Nokia Messaging mailbox you'll see it's consuming a lot more data. Maybe worth trying this on a WLAN first though if your packet data is costly!

As for Mail for Exchange, yes this is for corporate email. Generally used for connecting to Microsoft Exchange servers (or any that are compatible with Active Sync). It syncs more than just email. Often contacts & calendar. There are some public services that use it, e.g. Google Sync, although Google doesn't sync email on S60 platform, only contacts and calendar (quite why I don't know as Mail for Exchange works fine for email syncing).

Re: E72 Email Question

Hi

This was very helpful thread :smileyhappy:

I have two Gmail accounts over 'netac106.hosting.nokia...' , and sometimes I have a problem with downloading attachments. Sometimes they download normally and sometimes they stay on 0% for half an hour. Signal is always excellent I the attachments are small (round 50kb). I don't know what is the problem.

Do attachments load directly from gmail server, or they go ever nokia server, so that could be the problem?

Thanks

E72 Email set up Question

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help - I am deeply confused....I am a new owner of an E72 and set up the simple push email (as previously described). I actually get relatively few email messages and would prefer not to be 'always' on - at least in part because of battery implications - but to poll every 30 mins or so. I did 'diconnect' and 'reconnect' manually since this seemed to me to have the same outcome (??does it??) but would prefer to set up my ISP account ona polling basis - have NO IDEA how to do this. Can anyone help ? (preferably in words of one syllable Thanks...

Unfortunately, if it's configured via Nokia Messaging, the only options you have are either 'always on' or 'always off'.

There seems to be no option to set an interval.

I can see their logic in that it's a push email function and push has to be always on to work, but it's lacking to not offer a polling option also.

You can however set times when you want it to be on. So for example I set my work mail just during work hours.

The other option is to bypass Nokia Messaging and manually configure a mailbox through the 'Other' option in the email setup. You need your mail server settings for this. Once done you can configure a manual mailbox to poll every 30 mins or whenever.

P.S. An interesting and maybe useful feature of the E72 (though confusing when you don't realise what's going on), is that when the battery gets down to one bar, it will stop syncing your email. This saves the battery, but does leave you wondering why you're not getting email any more. The instant you plug in the charger, the mails resume.

Re: E72 Email set up Question

Thanks...having read the Vodafone forum on setting this up it all sounds incredibly unreliable ! so maybe I'll just have to stick with being 'always on' for now - grief associated with alternative sounds amazing. Unless anyone can persuade me otherwise. Umm.....how do you turn it off ? I live in a permanently 'on' state at the moment and would be interested in pursuing the timing and 'off' options that you mention !!

Re: E72 Email set up Question

Hi All,

I would like to ask a question that goes a bit beyond of setting the account.

It relates to using Gmail account via Nokia Messaging. I have configured NM account successfully. The problem I have is observed when sending a message from the handset. Everything looks fine in the application installed in the phone - the message is presented as sent and went to Outbox folder,  but after logging on Gmail website, I see a few mid-versions of sent email in the Draft folder, sometimes 2 versions of the same message are sent, while in the folders on the device everything looks fine.

What can be the problem here? My guess is that very frequent synchronization (almost instant) - which was probably one of the main idea for building the application - generates the copies of different stages of the same message.

Have you noticed similar problem? How it can be solved?

Thanks in advance for your help :smileyhappy:
