Re: E71 v500: New firmware, old bugs

I can only agree. Coming from a background in software testing, it's hard to believe (or understand) what kind of QA process is involved with software which clearly has fundamental issues, making it's way out to a 'production' environment.

Like many people on here, I'm a long time Nokia fan but the brand loyalty that so many have given Nokia over the years is obviously showing some serious cracks. Having taken a serious dent from the business community with devices from RIM and the likes, I wonder how long before Apple's and upcoming Windows Phone 7 devices find their way to becoming another significant nail in Nokia's coffin?

All seems like such a waste.

Absolutely right. Interesting that you have a QA background -- I ran a QA group at one point in my career. This *can* be done well. I'm a Unix/Linux guy. If you have ever run Slackware Linux or OpenBSD, those are two systems with very different development/QA/release methodologies  that run on large universes of hardware not controlled by the organization to which the software people belong (unlike Nokia), and they Just Work. I'm not saying there are no bugs -- that's absurd -- but the probability of running into trouble doing mainstream tasks with those two systems is exceedingly small.

I also wonder if Nokia knows about the value of negative feedback in their world. Do they use their own products? Do they pay careful attention to these discussion groups? Do managers ask the folks who know to tell them what they need to hear, rather than what they want to hear? I rather doubt it, based on my personal observations over a year + now of owning an E71. Admittedly, my sample is small, but it just looks to me like the feedback path either isn't there or it's much too long/slow. It feels like they make plans and execute those plans, completely oblivious to the screams of their customers and without the mid-course corrections that would happen if the feedback paths were in place and working.

Re: E71 v500: New firmware, old bugs

Just updated to v500 on my e71 and now the contact list won't launch.

Nokiaa!!! what the hell are you doing??!?! You should at least make your upgrade software capable of downgrading when you release **bleep** software.

Now I cant reach the contact list directly. I have to go through speedials or voice.

Did you restore your phone settings from the old firmware after the update? Or did you enter the settings again manually and just restore the user data, such as contacts, calendar, etc?

If I've helped you, you can thank me by clicking the green 'kudos' star on my post. Cheers.

Re: E71 v500: New firmware, old bugs

When you do a restore it is a good idea to NEVER restore the settings due to odd incompatibilities one encounters. Restoring contacts, calender, etc is fine.. just not the settings!

This means you will have to resetup your settings from scratch. But you avoid problems like you encountered.

Re: E71 v500: New firmware, old bugs

just restored everything sans settings.

Contacts finally works!

Sadly I have to go over every bit that i must have set over the years. Better than a dysfunctional phone though! Software must be reinstalled and memory card installed software doesnt seem to be recognized anymore.

This never happened to me before, and I've upgraded firmware thrice on this phone. My other phone, the Carbon Arte, has never had as many firmware upgrades as this phone but at least it's stable.

Thanks for the advice.

Re: E71 v500: New firmware, old bugs

Another bug here. Keypad auto lock will not stay turned off when the phone lock (password) is turned on.

Previously, I could just type my password to enter the phone when the keypad auto lock period was set to none, and the phone auto lock period was set to one minute.

After the upgrade, I must first unlock my phone with * + menu, then enter the password. This despite the fact that autolock keypad is set to none. Annoying.

Re: E71 v500: New firmware, old bugs - Mail4exchange dead

Mail4exchange is dead after more than one year of use, and I see myself forced to dump my good old Nokia and go to a more reliable manufacturer that takes care of their enterprise customers.

Anyone has any idea - ran into this issue? Is there a fix?

I get  "System error: Please try again later." Every time I try to synch.

And that annoying IBM traveler piece of garbage, I did not request it. Mobile SPAM?

Very Disappointed,

Stefan
