Jbgoode and Cognize - thank you both!! I note that there is no reference to this issue from Nokia.

The frozen time issue drove me to distraction until I found your solution.  I would also like to mention that the theories about "broken screen" and "memory card" are not really usefull suggestions as most of use would have worked through those theories before looking for other solutions.

What works best for me:

Themes > animation > options > settings >

I then chose :

Animation file: steel.swf

Animation time out: 1 second

Animation light time out: 1 second (saves power although the clock looks great in this screen)

However - my initial preference was for no screen saver as it usually pops-up whilst one is trying to read something, which is where the problem started, for Powersaver > none....quite poor really, for a company like Nokia.
