E71 keyboard problem

Hi,

I've been facing these problems with the keyboard since yesterday:

- When I click the down button, it does not trigger a down, but what the phone does is an "up", followed immediately by a "down", and a "click". Yes, 3 events with just 1 click.

- When I press the spacebar, I got an "@".

- When I press "w", I got "qetu".

- When I press "s", I got "adgj".

- When I press "o", I got an "i" followed by some click events.

- When I press "l", "k" followed by backspace and then the calendar app opens.

... you get the idea.

Once in a while, maybe about 5% of the time, the phone functions normally.

I'm running the latest firmware. Nokia E71 (RM-346) firmware version 100.07.76.

Please help!!!

Same problem. Go to Nokia Care Center for guaranty ... There is more than sure a faulty hardware not software.

Re: E71 keyboard problem

Yup, just got it repaired, keyboard replaced.

BUT the problem came back in a few hours!

I'll send it in again, this time I'll ask them to replace the main board. Or give me a new phone! :smileyhappy:

Re: E71 keyboard problem

The exact problem came back just hours after sending my E71 for a SECOND time.

I'll insist that they replace the entire phone. I'm getting very annoyed.

Does anyone else have this problem? Seems E71 has LOTS of problems. Maybe more problems than the iPhone? :smileyhappy:

(btw, I read that with the latest firmware, the iPhone is much more stable than before. If my E71 still gives me the keyboard problem, rendering it almost unusable, I may consider buying an iPhone and ditching Nokia altogether.)

Re: E71 keyboard problem

I've got the same problem here! All of a sudden my keyboard started to malfunction! The up-button isn't working, same goes for the q-,a-,z-,i-,k-,m-keys! Had the nokia store have a look, got it back and an hour later it all started to come back!

Maybe there's a firmware update or something that i'm not aware of? Love the nokia, had the E61 and E61i before. Had my share of problems with those as well, but never with the keys?! Perhaps it's better to go back to Blackberry, since they've got a better track record with qwerty keyboards? That would be a shame, since the reason I chose for the nokia was for the battery life!

I realy hope someone has a solution!

Re: E71 keyboard problem

Has anyone else experienced/solved this problem?

I have had my Nokia E71 functioning perfectly for 1 month and then suddenly exactly this problem has started to occur on my phone.

I've tried a hard reset, reinstalling firmware but still no joy. Are there any immediate solutions or is it time to send the phone back to the supplier?

Re: E71 keyboard problem

Same problem. The keyboard went crazy after 2 months. Seems to be fixed by a hard reboot at first but now the problem does not go away. Can we have an authoritative answer from Nokia whether it is board fault, a keyboard fault etc?

From the number of people who bothered to post the problem, it seems more than just a bad batch as it has been reported over a period of 6 months.

Shame though, I loved the E61, E61i and would like to carry on love this one.

Re: E71 keyboard problem

Went to Nokia repair centre. They reflashed it: it seems to work this time although when I did a reflash at home it had no effect. Unfortunately after using PodCast application, the keyboard problem reappeared. Then I remembered it also appeared the first time after downloading some PodCast.

Has anyone with this problem seen it appeared after using PodCast too?

E71 keyboard problem

It sounds like a fundamental problem with the E71 as exactly the same thing has occurred to my E71. The E71 was fine for about 6 weeks and then all of a sudden it became effectively useless for anything other than simple telephone calls. The problem on my E71 is:-

#  The central Navi key does not allow me to scroll down. When I press the down side of the Navi button it treats it like I had pressed the central enter function. This means I am unable to scroll down in any emails or web pages.

#  if I push the space bar – it gives me the symbol “@”

#  if I push the “w” key I get the symbols “qetu” ie. four letters of every second letter on the top keyboard row

#  if I push the “o” key I get am pop-up menu as if I had pushed the “Options” function key

#  if I push the “s” key I get the symbols “adgj” ie. four letters of every second letter on the middle keyboard row

#  if I push the “l” key I get the calendar pop-up

#  if I push the “x” key I get the symbols “zcbm” ie. four letters of every second letter on the bottom keyboard row

#  if I push the “.” Key I get the “close message” menu.

The problems above make it impossible to do any internet/web work on the phone and almost impossible to do any text messaging which is a real problem with the people I need to contact whilst travelling. I bought the E71 six weeks ago in Melbourne Australia which is where I live. I am now travelling in Europe for several weeks so this issue has become a real problem for me. I went in to the Nokia Flagship store in Regent Street, London and I was advise to reinstall the software. I did this and the problem has remained. Is there any solution to resolve this or am I forced to live with it until I get back to Australia next month and take it in to the store I bought it from ?

Hburr

Re: E71 keyboard problem

To : robben64

I'm afraid that I had to send the E71 in to Nokia for repair as it seems it is not a software problem but more likely a weakness in the circuitboard on the E71. I don't know what repair work was done but I now have the phone back and it's working OK.

Re: E71 keyboard problem

Having the same problem here, and would really rather not send in the phone and not have it for several weeks if it's going to have the same problem when I get it back.

The solution on the youtube line a few posts back worked on my phone, although I worry this is only a temporary fix.

Re: E71 keyboard problem

I am having a similar problem. The 'home' and all four arrow keys do not respond. The phone was bought on EBAY - as  a gift and apparently is an Asian model, so Nokia USA refuses to do repair on warranty. I tried solution on utube. (pressing various keys in locked mode) and it didn't work for me.

Please help me at least figure out if this is a software or hardware issue?

Re: E71 keyboard problem

I have the same problem. Is there a way to fix this problem myself?

My problem is that I can't even type my lock because one of the character is not working!

Re: E71 keyboard problem

I have the same problem as above. I had my E71 for about 6 months now and it started malfunctioning about 2 months ago.  Before I was able to make the keyboard problem go away by just removing the battery and pressing the keys for about 1 minute and then putting back the battery again.  Now this temporary solution does not work anymore and I was thinking of reflashing the firmware until I read some of the posts here which say that it is not guaranteed to fix this problem.  I will have no choice then but to talk to the store where I bought it from or have it repaired by Nokia service centre while it is still under the 1 year warranty period.

Re: E71 keyboard problem

I'm having the same problem too.

Unfortunately I'm already over the warranty period. The E71 worked for 15 months quite well, and suddenly last week this problem occured and won't go away. I tried all your tips. In maybe 5% of the time the problem disappears. This is when I write all my messages for the day ;-)

Today I wrote to the Nokia Customer Service. Hope they can help me/us.

What happened to the other guys who had the problem several months ago?

Did you switch to iPhone/blackberry... or did you find a solution?

I think we are getting too many with the same problem...
