E71: chr-ctrl-c? swap the chr/ctrl in a patch please

Wouldn't it be nice to swap the functions on the chr/ctrl-key? A patch could easily enable a "swap-mode".
-Coming from the E61 it feels ridiculous to hold three keys to cut/copy/paste text...
It's hard to swallow that the E71 is down on the number of keys on the keyboard but design is more important than functionality these days. After enjoying the E61 a lot, I had very high expectations about the E71. But again, it seems impossible to make the perfect device. Someone is messing it up, always. :smileyhappy:

Re: E71: chr-ctrl-c? swap the chr/ctrl in a patch please

same here, after 3 years of e61 I thought that e71 would be everything the e61 was but better, smaller and faster. Well almost right. Copy and paste is indeed dificult. And I also miss acess poings groups.

Well isn't there any app that allows you to remap keys? I remember one that could map the missing pencil key...

Re: E71: chr-ctrl-c? swap the chr/ctrl in a patch please

I just use SHIFT + D-pad to select text, then SHIFT + Soft LEFT Key (Copy) or SHIFT + Soft RIGHT Key (Paste).

I do agree I started to like the CTRL use on my E61 and though it a bit stupid they changed it. Maybe different people designed the E71 and never used a E61 before? :smileyhappy:

i think its easier... on E71 in the sense that you use fewer gestures...
Use SHIFT+D-pad to select... hold down SHIFT+left selection key for copy ... and then SHIFT+right selection key to paste...

Yes... i do agree... being user of E61i myself...(where we used SHIFT+D-pad to select then move both fingers and press CTRL+C to copy).. that CTRL+C was good... but this seems easier to me... as this uses fewer gestures... as i need to move only 1 of my fingers after selection to copy... and not both... :smileyhappy:

I don't know if I misunderstood you, but just in case:
You do not need to hold down the three buttons simultaneously (i.e. Fn+Ctrl+C), it is enough if you press (once) in the order: Fn > Ctrl > C

I do agree that it is stupid of whoever designed the phone to prioritize Chr as I hardly ever use that button but indeed use Ctrl at least once every day.

Thanks for all the inputs!
I may have been a bit fast on the trigger as there are "new ways of doing old stuff". I'll go home and rtfm.

Thanks again.

also thanks for the shift + softkey idea - i was struggling with the three keys...

still missing the ability to do control shift dpad to select whole words but that's something I can easily do without...

Agree. I just came up with another theory: other territories out there seems to miss the Fn + Q = ! alas they don't have double "value" in the qwerty?
If so _they_ need Chr more than we do - to bring up these special characters more often.
Check out this example:

(or is this pic just an early model?)

If some markets miss the "double value" keyboard, then it makes more sense to make Chr "default" in the lower right corner, in _their_ setup. :smileyhappy:
Just a(nother) theory.

I am also missing this, it actually bugs me more than the ctrl/chr issue. It is possible to do if you press and hold d-pad but then it highlights whole words sequentally (and very quickly so) which most of the time leads to me getting more than I bargained for. This is a feature I feel the need of quite often as I use it a lot on my laptop...

Check the key next to Chr/Ctrl, it does either "?" or (if pressed after pressing Fn) it does "!"

Re: E71: chr-ctrl-c? swap the chr/ctrl in a patch please

When someone said it's not a three-key-combo to select whole words he was right - it's a four-key-combo to select whole words, repeating the sequence for each word:
Fn+Chr/Ctrl+Shift+Dpad(left/right)

On my previous E61 I had Ctrl-Shift sitting next to each other, pressing them with the same thumb, making it very easy to select whole words/paragraphs (+joystick left/right/up/down).
New E71: as long as Chr/Ctrl and Shift is sitting on each side of the lower keyboard I would need both my thumbs to press them at the same time, making it difficult to reach the Dpad too. I'll try to live with/learn the "new" Shift-Dpad way of doing this.

Sorry that my message didn't come thru. I was trying to say that the phone in the picture was missing all the dual symbols embedded into the keyboard, and that they probably needed the Chr function more often than the rest of us (who has symbols spread out within the keys/letters).

This doesn't help me at all. I will be installing the firmware update and hope it allows me to move the Fcn-key to the Chr key, the Chr-key where the Ctrl-key is, and the Ctrl-key where the Fcn-key is. Anyone who is a moderate or power user, needs to be able to Ctrl+right key through words to edit a typo in a message or email, not hold the right key for an eternity.

Copying is time consuming in the same way, and the tip above doesn't speed up pasting (left key, scroll, brew pot of coffee as scrolling, then select editing options, then paste).

With the keypad, this phone has been a complete step backwards—and no I didn't have an E61. I want to remap the keys, I don't care if it doesn't make sense to someone who tries to look at/use my phone.

Good luck, I think you'll have to make your own firmware to do that...if even possible.

Re: E71: chr-ctrl-c? swap the chr/ctrl in a patch please

If I only need to press FN, then Ctrl and then C that is easy...I cant figure out how pressing all three together could ever be seen as easy and or fun...but my question is, how do you highlight sth? I can press the buttons to copy, but I havent figured out how to highlight yet?

Please? Someone?!

Thank you!

Re: E71: chr-ctrl-c? swap the chr/ctrl in a patch please

I'm not sure if different region has different firmware but for mine E71-1, to highlight, in editing mode, hold SHIFT and D-pad to highlight. While holding down SHIFT, Left-soft key will be COPY while Right-soft key will be PASTE.

Can anyone tell me how to enter/insert Tab/Indented in Quickoffice?

Thanks.
