I got an email back from the executive office (at Three) to say they are investigating my case and I'll hear back from them in four days time. In the meantime they instructed me to send my phone to them so that they can see if it has a fault and needs repairing. If the reason for my problems IS a fault I'll be very happy to get my phone back in working order.
We'll see... I'll update here when I have more news.

Hi Mawkish,
I've just received a replacement phone from 3 after getting the same problem (it was within 14 days of my upgrade), and I've already had the same problem again twice with my new handset (since yesterday), and am worried it might get worse, so it'd be interesting to hear what 3 have to say about it. Especially as their current contract offer for E71 is very appealing, there could be a lot more returns they have to deal with unless they allow a firmware update. I'm not keen to mess around with updates myself in case it invalidates the warranty, I'm also not sure if 3 will have a barney if I go straight to a Nokia Care Point with it, so I'm going to sit it out for a week or so, and then return again if it's still going haywire.
I've switched my handset to UTMS only for now, I think the 3G signal is strong in my area so I'm hoping that will at least give enough continued signal to make phone calls for a while...

Well, my phone went back to be repaired by Three, and I have it back in my hands now. I'm not happy.
Firstly, the phone now rattles and it didn't before. I was told they replaced two internal screws that were missing (???) and that they're replaced the "antenna assembly unit". Well, whatever they did, now it rattles.
Secondly, I was told they had upgraded the firmware. They lied, the firmware is exactly the same version (100.07.76).
Thirdly, as I try to install the software that I had on there before I am told there's a certificate error. There wasn't a certificate error before. I'd love to know what they've done to my phone.
Finally, the signal problem? Not fixed. Not even improved.
So, I've emailed back the executive office (I'll deal with them from now on, the customer services team are useless) and asked what on earth they're playing at. This is simply not good enough.
I'll post back when I know more.

This may well be my last post thread. I just got off the phone to a gentleman at the executive office of Three UK and they have again admitted that the problems I'm experiencing with the Nokia E71 are a known issue. I don't know whether it's a network specific problem or not, but I've been able to reproduce the problem again and again. When the signal drops to zero, the signal cannot be refound without a manual network selection (which leads me to believe this specific problem may be to do with the custom firmware Three has used in the E71).
Anyway, the reason I won't be posting to this thread anymore is because the only resolution Three could offer was a replacement of the handset with another model. I've been offered a Nokia N96 or a Nokia N95 8GB (with a reduction in line rental). I've agreed to the Nokia N96 on the condition that if it's not suitable (I get a day to test it) I am able to swap it for the second option. Obviously these are downgraded phones compared to the E71 in terms of features but at this stage I don't care, I'll just be happy to be able to have reliable phone!
Fingers crossed. Maybe you'll see me posting in an N96 thread soon ![]()

Hello,
It’s been sometime I have posted in this forum because of simple reasons. Nokia Care sucks. I have changed my Nokia E71 3 times. Same signal issues. I have moved to all the providers and also been in all states of India and same issue. So what I did is put the phone in dustbin and bought iPhone and I am happy for last few months. I can’t sue Nokia in India and would love to support and I have about 400+ people and their contact info and email address who face the same problem with Nokia E71.
I also have facts and emails from Airtel & Reliance GSM telling me that there are so many complaints on Nokia E71 and they have take off that model from their stores.
I have tried all things which include sending email to Nokia CEO, CTO, CFO, COO and also sent multiple fax into their office and number of emails and no response.
Funny this is go to a Nokia care and tell them about signal issue and they say we will replace the phone without any questions (This means that Nokia is aware of the issue)
I am on the latest firmware and no hope.
What I have done is I send out the complaint to some news groups in India to promote Anti Nokia 71 and people have been e-mailing telling that they did not buy after reading this forum and a simple Google search.
Even more funny fact is that Nokia was my past client and they B2B ERP was done by us and there seems to be no info on how to escalate issues in Nokia. Sometime ago I did a online survey (Showed about 24764 users affected) and then a Nokia Design person called me from a UK Number and told me that the are aware of the issue and he offered me free phone in any model in Nokia (I will not go and still stick Nokia E71 as a paper weight on my desk. Now Nokia can add a feature to their list as Paper Weight.

I'm glad to hear you've got a new phone out of 3, mawkish well done on your persistance!
I also seem to have sorted my problem with E71 on 3 as well - it turned out to be the SIM card, as I had an upgrade from a previous 3 phone, they just told me to move my SIM over, but it's an older versions and for whatever reason was not compatible with my E71 and kept losing signal. I noticed that the new PAYG SIM they had given me was different and after my second set of crashes I put this new one in for a week. No problems, not once.
I tried to get the number transferred by phoning up 3 customer services and they were useless and really unhelpful, so I just went back to the 3 store and they gave me a replacement SIM card straight away, no problems since. It seems they were aware that the difference between the old SIM and the new one might cause problems, but I had to go and test out the theory first myself before I could get the problem solve.
If anyone has similar problems with an E71 on 3 though, don't forget to check your SIM! You can get a free PAYG one to compare it with. I will try and post a photo of the difference between the two at some point.

rhianonny = I already tried a few NEW version simcards. The contacts look smaller than the old ones. It never solved my signal problem. I also bought those stick on signal boosters and never saw a difference. I also found out just today that O2 does not support E71 at the moment (that's what O2 UK told me, I even went to a high street O2 shop) that's why I am unable to send MMS and browse the web.
So I called my credit card company to see where I stand because I already know Carphone warehouse (where I bought my E71) apparently will only do a replacement and not refund. I have also spoken to carphone's customer support who weren't really supportive. To cut a long story short, I was asked by my credit card company to go to carphone and ask them to demonstrate how to make my phone work or at least make my phone work, if they can't, let them speak to O2 and send the settings (which I already did 6 times with no result) and if they (carphone warehouse) refuse to give refund, then my CC will step in. Fortunately I spoke to the right person in the shop and she agreed to refund. That was after almost an hour of talking and waiting for them to make phonecalls.
I'll use my old N70 for now and wait for a better handset, maybe the E72.
Goodbye E71!!!
