E71 Shut Down

All of a sudden, my E71 is shutting down as soon as I press a key. I turn it back on, and will remain on until I touch any key, and then it shuts down. I can't do anything.

Anyone have any suggestions???

Thank you.

Re: E71 Shut Down

Can you try to re-install the software at all, or does selecting PC suite after plugging in the cable make it shut down?

Re: E71 Shut Down

As soon as I touch any key it shuts down right away. Very troubling.

Re: E71 Shut Down

Mine just started doing the same thing.

I thought maybe reset, but supposedly that requires the typing of numbers from the keypad - which isn't possible since it shuts down after hitting the first key.

Here's someone else who has experienced the same after resetting:

Re: E71 Shut Down

worse case, try to do a hard reset by pressing the '3'+'*' key when turn on the power since you can't use the *#7370# method.

Good luck.

Re: E71 Shut Down

OK, interesting. I just tried 3 + * and power on...and it worked. I also had the battery out of the phone all night...

Not sure if both pieces helped, but performance appears to have returned to normal. And all my contacts, calendar entries, and programs have been retained (they were stored in phone memory).

Tip: Since e71's 3 and * both require the number-shift key to be pressed, I was holding down all 3 keys when I powered on. Once phone started up, tt prompted me for current time and date...but then loaded my phone with all settings exactly as I had left them...and is not shutting down on first key press.

Anyway, mine's working again for now. Thanks for alternate reset recommendation. I read previously that also hitting the green phone key, in addition to 3 and *, was important. I tried this before with no luck. Not pressing the green key, but still pressing the others, worked better...

Re: E71 Shut Down

I've been having this problem for 2 months now. Let me elaborate...

Whenever I press any key it shuts down. I've tried all the solutions mentioned on this page, to no avail.

Since I was too busy to take it to the service centre, I left it alone for a whole month. Then it suddenly started working. It continued to work for about 4-5 days before the problem crept up again.

Now I'm really **bleep**!

Re: E71 Shut Down

Interestingly... my problem disappeared. And it has never started up again. I have no clue what happened. My only thought is that the battery seems to sit very loosely in the casing, and perhaps it was losing connection when i started to hit keys. I did attempt a hard reset as was described on an earlier posting. I'm not sure what it was that caused it to work.....

Re: E71 Shut Down

I too have this exact same problem.  About 3 weeks ago I installed the latest firmware, I now have ATT service and couldn't do it without having cell phone servers (LAME NOKIA!).  It worked perfectly for about 3 weeks and now anytime I touch a key it shuts the phone off.  Sometimes it'll let you do a few things but then it'll shut down again.

I called support and you have to RMA the phone.  I tried all the above options and none of them worked.

US -  888-665-4228, I think it's option 2 and then option 1

They gave me an RMA right away so far that's good customer service :-)

That also means it must be a common problem they're dealing with.  You pay to ship it one way and they pay for it on the way back.

Address they gave me was...

Nokia Authoried Repair center

CO:  Palco

2914 Green Cove Rd

Huntsville, AL 35803-3526

You have to put a piece of paper in the package with...

Name

Address

Phone number

Proof of purchase (optional)

Description of your problem

RMA #

You also need to take any sim cards you have out, memory cards, the battery and the back plate.  Just send in the core phone component.

Hope that helps everyone else having the same problem.

Re: E71 Shut Down

As was mentioned earlier. I also opened my phone and cleaned it, especially the battery contacts and this resolved the problem.

Re: E71 Shut Down

Nokia E71 OS seems to have an issue with 3G enabling. I had a similar problem for almost 4-5 months. Try the following:

Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone > Network > Network Mode > Select GSM

This should work, also upgrade to the latest software 500.21.009

cheers

Re: E71 Shut Down

I guess it's not a software problem, more like a hardware issue. Tried resetting the phone, updating the software etc. - didn't help. Completely dissasembled the phone and noticed that when I separate the display and keyboard from the motherboard (but do not disconnect it) it's working fine and you can press the buttons as much as you like - it won't shut off. But, when I tightened the screws above the display, it shuts off after the button is being pressed. Short circuit - I guess. So, I've tried hitting it gently against the table (not kidding) on the side where USB and MicroSD are so it doesn't scratch, and it started working normally. We'll see for how long, but it worked :smileyhappy: If you get desperate trying previous solutions, try this one (not actually a solution, but...), it might work for you also :smileyhappy:
