I am having exactly the same problem. Admittedly I have had other applications running simultaneously such as maps or e-mail. But at some point in the day the HOME key toggles between the shortcut screen, and the shortcut screen with a small rectangle in the top right hand corner showing something different.
It becomes impossible to get to the main menu screen and the only solution is to switch off and switch back on.
I've also had one time when I had to actually remove the battery because the phone stopped responding (unsure what events led to this however).
Frustrating and hopefully a firmware upgrade will fix this.

I can't stand it anymore... I hope I will not have to exchange it for an other ![]()

Are you sure that you waited long enough before taking out the battery and all that?
Because with S60 phones there are instances when the processor goes in a loop ( like in the case of PC's and notebooks ) and takes a longish period of time before the menue is finally restored. They're not always as fast as the S40 devices.

I’d suggest performing a complete factory reset (dial *#7370#) and removing your memory card for a short while.
If you re-test without the memory card and it works, you can format the memory card. By performing these steps though, you will lose any personal information you keep (photos, contacts, messages etc).

The Nokia firmware developers should be taking an interest in this case to understand why the phone operating system is semi-locking up.
This is not a simple matter of "waiting for the phone to catch up". Once the menu refuses to display no amount of waiting will suddenly restore the functionality.
A factory reset is NOT the solution. Why? Because merely powering down and powering up the phone will restore functionality. This implies a problem with the operating system.
And those who are posting to this forum that the problem is an imaginary one are being un-constructive.
I am continuing to have this problem roughly once every 2 or 3 days. If I can determine some common factor I will post it but as yet I have none. I don't know if it is using the wi-fi that triggers it, or using up all the RAM, or having the GPS run.
Having a locking-up OS is a reasonably important issue. To the nay-sayers who simply don't believe the problem exists I suggest reviewing how many different people have posted to this forum topic with testamonials to the problem.

I recommend you reinstall (update) your software.
I've tried taking out the battery several times and restored the factory settings but it didn't work either, so I reinstall the software, since then I haven't had any problems. I do think that Nokia should not have put this mobile out for sale especially with all these problems. The mobile cannot cope with having different applications open at the same time, not enough RAM and maybe some fault in the operating system and software.
Hope it works for you

It's updated via the Nokia Software Updater. Check out the many existing articles on this matter in this forum.
Sadly, but personally I find it true that Nokia products, especially smartphones, do roll out with bad firmware. Something to do with the complexities as compared to S40? E71 has its share of hung menu, purple tint and what not.
That's why I'm getting an E71 only next month... ![]()

I am also having problems with the keys not responding. It reminds me of when keys on a keyboard die, and usually they have been replaced under warranty. Tech Support from Rogers Canada, keeps telling me I have to do a Master Reset, or a Master Clear. That does not feel correct to me. I am not always right, but I am not ready to wipe everything. I will read more of this discussion later.
I am curious, where are these problems happening? I am in Canada. And first time on this message board, so if I asked something I shouldn't have, please don't answer me.

I'm in London but the phone is from Canada, Rogers. got it as a gift. I have updated my software as instructed but that didn't stop the menu from freezing up. So all left to do is for Nokia should replace all the faulty phones.
