E71 Camera tone - A tone frenzy Phone

First I find out I can't turn off the annoyingly loud welcome tone playing the nokia tune,

now I find out that I can't turn off the camera tone, so everytime I use the camera I get a massivle loud camera noise, it's great (not) I can select camera tone 1 through 4 all loud and very "hey - check me out using a camera" all the other nokia phones I've had you can turn the camera noises off, but this phone is really starting to get on my nerves with the ammount of sound that can't be turned off and play at loud volumes.

Am I missing something or can you not turn the camera tones off ?

The camera tone is a legal requirement in certain countries. It is there to help ensure that you can't sneak a photograph.

As for the welcome tone, you can cancel it using the # key just before it starts playing.

Re: E71 Camera tone - A tone frenzy Phone

ooh really, thats interesting, I had no idea it was a legal requirment, my 6300 doesn't have the camera tone forced on in the UK, but the E71 does, how annoying, I wasn't using it for dodgy use, more a case of, if you take a photo of something interesting like a silly advert on the tube everyone looks when they hear a 12db camera tone clicking, sort of draws attention to you, which I suppose is the point.

This phones turning out to be quiet the embarasment in terms of tone (already got the hint on the # key - thank you)

Re: E71 Camera tone - A tone frenzy Phone

Does the camera still make a noise if you put your phone in silent mode?

The 6300 was released before it became a legal requirement in many countries.

The startup tone can be cancelled by any key, not just the # key. Also if you put the phone in silent mode before you switch it off the startup tone won't sound when you switch it back on.

These are just workarounds as there is no way to change this behaviour.

Re: E71 Camera tone - A tone frenzy Phone

yeah, the startup done is annoying, but a few people have suggested the same work around (nokia if you read this please disable it in future firmware).

The camera tone in silent mode - I'll try but I can't try now as I'm in the office and massive camera noise would attract attention

Re: E71 Camera tone - A tone frenzy Phone

Good news: I tried the camera in silent profile and no camera tone is heard.

It's ironic that this workaround pretty much defeats the purpose of the legal requirement... NOKIA, if you're reading this: how about including a "none" option in camera tones (and disabling it depending on the country)?

(Tried the start-up tone and it worked too.)

As others have said, the camera tone seems to be a legal requirement in some countries and you can't always get rid of it.

The Nokia startup can also be permanently disabled if you set a welcome message - any text or image works - no need to fiddle with profiles.

Re: E71 Camera tone - A tone frenzy Phone

Hi sanjaymehta,

I tried your suggestion and set a welcome text, but it didn't work for me. The startup tone still rings, and only then does my welcome text show.

Can you please tell me if I'm doing something wrong? I'd really like to get rid of this darn welcome tone (prior nokia phones had a setting to disable it, and this model doesn't).

Thanks!

Re: E71 Camera tone - A tone frenzy Phone

Okay, I was confused. To double check on the settings in my phone, I removed my custom text, powered off the phone, and restarted. No welcome sound. Nothing.

Turns out I had changed two settings at the same time and the one which controls the sounds is called "Warning tones" in Tools-Settings-General-Personalisation-Tones-Warning Tones. Sorry for confusing you as well.

The camera tone doesn't go away for me either way, though.

but now you won't get any warnings, for example when the battery is going low, or when your bluetooth headset connects/dissconnects (just as easy examples)

There's one thing I found out: install the CameraFX software (it's more of a toy kind, allows to turn on the front camera etc.), run it and disable the camera sound. Having done this, I no longer hear it when I use the phone camera.

This is from wildpalm.co.uk? Just tried their trial, certificate expired. Then I looked at the phones supported ... E71 isn't there.

It works just fine on my E71 (110.07.127). An ugly icon, though.

surprisingly, I do get a sound signal when my battery is low and on other occasions. I don't know what the specific criterion for "warning". But you're right: there must be something I won't learn about thru sound.

bad news for you. DO NOT install the new firmware. Nokia has hardcoded the camera sounds even in silent mode! There is no way to disable the camera sounds now.

Re: E71 Camera tone - A tone frenzy Phone

I have the same problem with the camera sound, and after looking for the solution around for sometime, I finally come to a simple solution. Just plug your headphones in, and you won't hear any sound from the loadspeaker.

hope this work with yours,

As far as I know, there's no legal requirement for the camera tone in India. I do know that Singapore requires it and I suspect that Nokia has kept it simple by keeping the tone for most similar markets.
