Hello,
I am having a problem with my E71 - chargers (have tried with several) do not work when connected to the phone. When the battery is taken out and charged inside a different phone the battery will charge and the phone will work but that is the only way to get it to work.
I took it to a repair shop in the US and they said that there is a corrosion issue in or around the charger port and that the only way to fix it would be to replace the motherboard, which would cost hundreds of dollars. Has anyone run into this problem before? I have contemplated just getting an external battery charger but want to try and fix the phone properly instead of having to open it up every other day to charge the battery.
Any thoughts on what to do??

That sounds like a load of old cobblers to me.
I have had a defective and water damaged (clearly non warranty repair) Nokia E71 apart and the charging jack on the bottom of the handset is a separate component. If the charging jack is corroded its a simple job for them to replace it.
The motherboard and the connector are not attached by way of soldering and it connects by way of gold flashed pads in the device. It is a completely separate part from the motherboard and does not require replacement of the motherboard to change it.
If the corrosion is on some other part of the motherboard then in that case it would require replacement however which could be argued as water damage which would not be covered.
Get a second opinion at another care point.
DO NOT disassemble your handset yourself, this will completely invalidate your warranty the handset that I took apart was dead and had been dropped in a pond hence I took it apart.
Shunts...
