Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

I've had a look and the instructions are on page 112 of the user guide, but despite putting in an unlock code, time period and message text, I couldn't get a message to lock the phone remotely....

I'll repost if I solve it.... anyone else use this?

Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

OK I didnt know this feature existed but I have just tested it with mine and it functions correctly.

Go to Menu --> Settings --> Tools --> General --> Security --> Phone and SIM card.

Go To "Allow Remote Lock" we will assume that the default Lock Code of 12345 is still set first. Switch the "Allow Remote Lock" from No to Yes, it will ask you what you want the message to be, so for example "lockmye71" you have to enter this twice and then it will ask you for your phones lock code which is (default) 12345, the lock will then be set, when you send a message with "lockmye71" on its own to the phone the phone will lock and then reply to the number you sent the message from saying that it has been locked as a confirmation.

Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

Cheers shuntfield,

Works.... I thought i'd completed it before - but the text you send has to be the same case as the lock code - works fine though.....

Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

Dear Shunts,

Thank you for the very clear instructions. I just bought my E71 and before I actually remote-lock it, can you please advise which code to key in to UNLOCK the phone after it has been remotely locked ? To quote your example, is it 12345 or lockmye71 ?

You set your own passphrase, the example I have given is lockmye71 but you have to select your own word so that when it is sent to your E71 the device locks.

To unlock the phone you need to use the phones unlock code, whose default is 12345

There is a function that can be enabled via the security menu on almost all Nokia's that if a SIM card other than the one that is currently installed, the phone will lock. I think seeing as this is a remote lock that the function would be enabled when this service is activated in the handset.

Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

Will the phone actually lock in that case? Or does it just refuse to work with other SIM card?

Also, it would be nice to have personalized "lock-on message" on screen after phone is locked. Like "call to ####### for return fee or return the phone to local Lost & Found office".

Oh... and "This phone is currently locked and tracked with GPS. Honest person would return it as soon as possible." would be funny, too.

You cannot use it at all.

If you enable the remote lock, as soon as the phone is powered down and the SIM swapped, then when you switch it back on it asks for the lock code, it does this even if you just power it down and back up, with the same SIM.

If you do not supply the code the handset remains locked out, until you do, so it is advisable that you dont keep the default 12345.

If you intend to use that feature, you MUST change the default lock code from 12345 to a code of your liking (and it should be different from your SIM code)! Every thief will immediately try 12345 in case he "finds" a locked phone.

The lock phrase is the message you sent via SMS. It's not the code you enter to unlock the phone.

If you enable the feature and you power up your phone you will be required to enter your SIM code AND the phone lock code!

Again - unless you change the lock code there is no added protection!

Btw, Nokia claims that the lock code locks both phone and memory card. I haven't tried accessing the card thou card reader when removing it from "locked" phone.

It would be cool if the remote lock would activate the GPS and send you the phone coordinates at certain intervals...:-)

Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

Help ! I successfully tried out the remote lock on my phone some days ago, and got it unlocked and everything was fine. Today I shut down my phone for the first time since that event as I had to travel by air. When I tried to start up the phone after getting down from the plane, in addition to the PIN code, I was also asked to key in the lock-code. Fine, and that was successfully done. But lo and behold ! when the phone started up, all the stuff that I had loaded onto my memory card disappeared, including things like ring tones ( that was how I discovered it, as my set ring tone was gone ). I went to tools->settings->memory, and the pop-up message was "your memory card is corrupted Do you want to re-format your card?". Formatting my card would definitely erase all the contents of my memory card. Is there still a way to salvage my memory card's contents ? Does it mean that everytime the phone is restarted up, this happens ? Appreciate sme help from those who have experienced this and solved it.

Thank you.

Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

I had this same problem. My memory card suddenly getting corrupted, but I managed to solve it. I believe the source of the problem is the Remote Lock and the Device Lock of the unit. I have an E63 unit (same as E71).

The problem started after I enabled the Device Lock and Remote Lock of my E63 unit. After a couple of hours, I tried to manage my apps in the memory card. To my surprise, it's corrupted! I didn't panic because I believe I could retrieve the files with my PC. But when I inserted my memory card to a memory reader into my PC, the card is unreadable. I had a feeling that the card is really corrupted. But how? I just got this unit almost a day ago. I didn't do anything odd. I'm an OOP-Design Patterns oriented programmer so I'm not newbie when it comes to best practices.

As I searched the web, I found that there are cases too that had this same exact problem. And their guess is also the Device Lock.

So what I did is I disable the Remote Lock and the Device Lock. I checked my memory card and it's still corrupted!

So, I turn off my unit and turn it on again, it's still corrupted!

I removed the memory card while the unit is on (Make sure you use the remove memory card feature of your unit!!!) and then reinserted the card, and it worked.

In summary, to solve this memory corrupted problem: try disabling the Remote Lock and Device Lock. To disable the Device Lock, revert the password to "12345" (Do not type the quotes). Remove the memory card (Use the remove memory card feature of your unit!!!). Re-insert card and problem fixed.

Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

Its happened to me again today - 2nd time in 2 days. Once again, it was after I powered up the phone after switching it off while taking a flight. Once again I took out the memory card while the phone is ON, put it back in, and presto ! the card's back.

However, I am a bit disappointed though at this seeming technical weakness of the remote lock feature. I wonder whether this will cause the memory card to fail prematurely ? Also, I am not sure whether this happens to ALL E71s with remote lock enabled, or randomly to some ? To all of you out there with remote lock enabled on your E71, do ALL of you face this problem, or are there SOME of you who don't have this problem ?

Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

Same thing happen to me again. Card is corrupted. Removed the card and put the card back and programs are back.

However, I cannot open the applications on the Memory Card. I can see the icons. Any ideas? I tried moving it to a different folder. Same problem. I tried copying the programs to the phone memory but I cannot. Any ideas?

Re: E71 : Auto Remote Lock

2 days ago, somehow the applications on my memory card all "hung" - i could see them but they could not be opened. other non-program files on the memory card were ok. I undid the remote lock, backed up my memory card contents to my computer using Nokia PC Suite, and reformatted the memory card, then brought back my files from the computer to the phone again using PC Suite. Now all the program files that were previously on the memory card disappeared from view ! All other non-program files were reintstated. However, when I opened tools->memory card, I saw that the program files were still there, only thing is that they are now "hidden" somehow and cannot be accessed ! Proof that the programs are still there was that I could still play the u-tube videos .flv which I downloading using mobitubia ( even though now I cannot see mobitubia in my applications. Until now I cannot solve the problem, so I had no choice but to re-download the program files from the internet 1 by 1. When I downloaded the program files, the screen on my phone stated - file already exists, do you want to replace it ! There you go, its still there !

So I reinstated my remotely lock again, and another strange thing happened ! The message sent to to the mobile used for remote lock stated "mobile phone locked". Previously before this incident happened, and before I formatted the memory card, the message upon remote locking stated "mobile phone AND memory card locked" !!! So apparently the remote lock now ONLY locks my phone and NOT my memory card. Sigh, there seems to be a lot of this "teething" software problems with E71. Hope nothing more serious will crop up.

If any of you has an answer to the above or knows how to reintstate the memory card lock through the remote lock, pls share. Thank you.

I'm not sure exactly what you have done.

You need to send the exact word that you set up in the remote lock options. Then it will work.

You need to remember that the locking code, will be asked for when you start up the phone if it is set this is so that it stops someone simply switching the phone off and back on again.

So for example

You set the word phrase lockthephone into the handset, when you send a text message with the works lockthephone  to the handset the handset will lock, and send a SMS back to the originator saying that the handset has been locked.

I would remove the lock and start again from the beginning.
