When I switch network to UMTS from tools>settings>phone>network I do not get 3G signal, never from nowhere. I get a little '3G' on top left corner but never a signal. Then I switch to dual mode and it switches straightaway to GSM, get a little antenna icon on top left corner and signal strength bar.
Also checked with operator Vodafone and stated that I do not have any restrictions. Does anyone one know what could be the cause?

Thanks for your post, and I guess that explains it all. My model is E71-2 RM357 0569371 which operates on 1900 mhz whereas I am in Malta (Europe) which operates on 2100 mhz.
I will have to change the phone, unless there is a way how to change the frequency?

That would be the problem. You have the North American version of the E71. And no there is no way to change the frequency as it is a hardware issue and not a software issue.
