My E7 is connecting to the internet in regular intervals, although there should be no appearent reason. I am trying to keep all outgoing data connections to a necessary minimum, mainly to maximize the device's standby time. However, I cannot get rid of some automatic connections, thus I have no idea what processes or applications actually trigger them.
My device is set with the following configuration:
- RSS reader widgets are all removed
- RSS feeds seem to stay offline according to the update timestamp shown with each feed
- Widgets are set to offline
- Social 1.3b is installed, but does not seem to update status since only older status messages are shown
- mail synchronization is set to manual for all accounts
- Nokia situation beta was installed, but removed
- Skype, Nimbuzz and IM+ are installed, but not running
- WLAN monitoring is off
I have a couple of third-party applications installed as well of which none should be running. Is there any way to monitor the outgoing data connections? I.e. which applications are responsible?
Any hints are appreciated.
Robert

Try best Task Ma, that tells you everything that's running even in the background. Also in your connectivity setting s set internet to 'Always Ask' and the phone should not connect to the web without asking, and you can of course reject this request !

Thanks for pointing me to the app. I'll try it out.
Last night, I have set the phone's settings to always ask when connecting via 3G and to manually enter WLAN networks. However, the phone has connected twice to my home WLAN despite those settings. I am not aware of any other setting controlling data connections. Strange...

Do you use the World Traveller app ? It was causing me problems and I had to delete it and installed an access point that wasn't removeable !!

I have an app installed called "Traveller". Is this the application you mean?
It was preloaded on the phone when I bought it. I started it once, but I did not use it ever since. I will remove it and see what happens. Regardless of that, I have no rogue access points installed, as you stated. (that would suck indeed).

It was one of the 'features' on World Traveller that caused me problems, it has a WIFI search tool, but once it installs an access point it is locked and cannot be removed, and the access point continually searches for wifi !! Very annoying ![]()

Please someone, I have the same problem, we need solution for this one.
I set everywhere 'Always Ask' before connection to WLAN, and then go disconect it, but it connects automaticly again.
I even deleted the shortcuts on one of the 3 menus (those where are BBC, NAT, E! news), but still.
I deleted also the shortcut for email on my menu, 'cause I thought that might be causing it.
This emptiness the battery ridciously faster - and I haven't received any respond from Local Support Site for Nokia. Could this be an unfixable error on this mobile phone?

GUYS!
I might have found a temporary solution for our problems. Do this:
- Settings -> Connections -> Settings -> Goals -> Internet -> Here you delete your WLAN
HOWEVER! : You have to do it fast. Before you can delete it, you have to go disconect it and then quickly go back to the Settings where you can Delete your WLAN (above instructions).
IMPORTMANT!: I do not know what his causes, but I deleted it and now it doesn't automaticly connect anymore.
If anyone finds an answer what could it be, please respond.

Have you set Show WLAN availability to never in WLAN settings ? And also enabled power saving in WLAN settings ?

I explained the steps I did which are working fine, my phone doesn't connect automaticly anymore.
Though if I go to WLAN and want to connect back on our home WLAN, it will start connect again all the time - unless I do the steps I mentioned in previous post.

@carman58:
I double checked the "World Traveller" app, and it was really set to autonomously connect to the internet, obvoiusly bypassing the phone's settings ![]()
However, what did you mean that one of your access points continually searches for wifi? How does a acces point search for WiFi networks by itself? Are you talking about
Settings -> Connections -> Settings -> Goals?
I cannot see how you can actually set up individual behaviours for the access points listed here.
According to what you have said, I believe that the settings for GPRS are "harder" than for WiFi. "Ask before going online" ALWAYS prevents the phone from connecting to the internet by itself. "Manually entering WiFi" seems to apply for applications without a dedicated access point only, i.e. if an app allows you to choose an access point, it will ignore any WiFi access settings.
However, to my understanding you are setting up your WiFi connection every time you connect to you WLAN, and you erase the access point after you're done. Seems very elaborate to me. Concluding from this discussion so far, I believe you have a daemon running. You need to figure out which process is actually controlling it.

step 1:
tap "Optionions" on home screen
step 2:
tap "Widgets to offline mode"
job done

I also have this problem with my E7-00.
I just got my E7 less than 1 wk.
Initially i thought it is due to the WhatApp application i installed..it comes preloaded when i bought it..and everytime when i power off/on my phone, this apps is auto run - but i don't have any account with WhatsApp...Then i uninstall the WhatsApp, still the phone is automatically connect to internet.
Next, when I press & hold the home button, the open application menu pop-up and shown there is NO open applications. Thus what is triggering the phone to make internet connection?
My internet connection here is charged by time based..I can't keep letting my phone doing auto connection time to time. This is crazy and i have a VERY strong feeling it has something related to the E7 software itself.

@maniac_2k I didn't set the access pint to automatically search fr wifi, there is an app built into Worls Traveller, which set up a 'locked' access point which I could not remove without hard resetting the phone !!

Here is the full official FAQ about this, it seems that there are some things in it which have not already been tested here:
Your Symbian^3 device establishes a WLAN connection automatically if there is an application requesting access to the network and you are under the coverage of a WLAN network which is defined in the destination settings of the device.
Usually the applications are connecting through the default Internet destination group. To see what access points you have in this group, select Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Settings > Destinations > Internet (or some other group, if it has been selected as the default destination).
If the destination group contains both WLAN and cellular access points, the switching between the access points can be controlled with the Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Settings > Switch to WLAN setting:
If you don't want the WLAN connection to be automatically established, you can remove the WLAN access points from the default destination group:
After removing the WLAN access points from the default destination group, the network connection will be established via the cellular connection (if defined in the destination group).
To prevent the automatic data connections to both cellular and WLAN networks, you can disable the automatic connections in the application settings. Depending on the application, this can be done e.g. in the following way:
Note that any applications running in the background may trigger the network connections to be established. Long press the Menu button to see the currently active applications.

The MM msg setting change to manual, this will close a connection to open data which id not linked to any internet settings or apps. To open a MM msg a option will be to connect one time only for that txt.

Thanks for the insight on how Symbian^3 handles data connections. Not very intuitive, though. Let me check if I got this straight:
- "Always ask" concerns GPRS/3G connections only
- it is not possible to disable automatic connections to WLANs, since the settings are meant to describe the behavior when switching away from 3G connections.
- Thus, it is also not possible to turn WLAN scanning off
Well, on second thought, this design does make sense. But if you have some rogue app running that connects to the internet all the time, you may have a hard time identifying it. Thanks to carman58, we know that "World Traveller" is one of them!
