Hmmm, the standard Nokia response. Work for them do you?
To all those who would try and offer some "advice" note the following well... I formatted the phone, reset it to factory defaults thereby removing ALL contact information. No possibility of duplicates at all. I then entered a single contact with a single number and the caller ID DOES NOT WORK.
Get it?
The caller ID DOES NOT WORK if the number is stored with an international prefix.
What can we take away from jimmyirelands signature??? Free advice is useless...

hey there i am not sure if you read this, read the okinawa explanation for why things might be a little off with the contacts. if you have them on the sim card as well as on the phone memory that will also contitute a double entry. this is user to user forum we are people just like yourself., you will not get an official nokia response here if you are looking for that.
If this post answers your question, you can help others by clicking the green accepted solution' button. Thanks much ! You know what I love about you the most, the fact that you are not me !

@ radical24
Appreciate your input but have read the okinawa explanation previously...
I can assure you that I do not have a duplicates problem. I have no contacts stored on the SIM card at all. None. I even delete all the rubbish that my service provider (Vodafone) puts on the cards before they issue them.
To anyone else thinking I have a user created reason why Caller ID does not work - Vodafone have confirmed to me that a problem exists with ALL Nokia Symbian phones. This is quite simply an Operating System issue that Nokia is dodging working out a fix for.
Read my post properly...
Without the international prefix the Caller ID works on incoming calls. With the international prefix it doesn't.
Without the international prefix the Caller ID does not work for SMS. With the international prefix it does.
I am coming close to the point where I'm going to get rid of my E66.
BUT I will not let Nokia off the hook. They have sold a defective product and don't want to take responsibility for it. I am quite willing to take them on legally and have already spoken to a number of lawyers who have advised me to take advantage of the strong consumer protection laws in the European Union to force Nokia to admit they have sold a defective product.
And as far as not getting an official Nokia response on these forums... Who do you think runs this discussion board? Are you so naive as to think that Nokia doesn't watch this forum and seed it with advice that they want you to accept?
21-Jan-2009 11:01 PM
i did not say that nokia is not watching the forums, i said that you will not get any official nokia response here unless you use the top right of the site contact us button.
and yes it is a known issue in s60 devices, that is not a secret. i am sorry that it brings about distress and frustration.

And an unnecessary degree of rudeness towards those trying to assist us with our problem.

Lets get this straight people... these discussion forums are run by Nokia to provide a way for users of their products to interact with Nokia technical people on a wider basis than just one-to-one.
They are meant to provide an avenue for Nokia to find a solution and broadcast it to as many of their users as are willing to search and read the discussions. By doing this they reach a large number of people with minimal effort.
Should this not be the case then Nokia should shut these discussion forums down as they would serve little or no purpose without advice being given by Nokia technical people who know their product inside out.
If there is any rudeness manifest in my posts here it is quite simply because I have had enough of Nokia trying to dodge a problem that is, apparently, well known to everyone except their development and support staff.
I have just had an official response from Nokia that suggests I take my E66 into a Nokia service centre to have them load up the latest version of the firmware. How will this differ in any way from my having just done the same thing? Will it fix the problem? Of course not, there is no fix so far.
I want them to admit there is a flaw so I can return this rotten phone and get a full refund. Moreover I want no one else to go through this sort of frustration and I can only achieve that if Nokia publicly admits that their smartphones are about as dumb as they come.
For heavens sake - an entry level Nokia I bought for USD10 the other day provides proper Caller ID using the same SIM card and obviously running on the same network.
For the record - I have over 20 years of experience in IT support and currently work in the communications sector. I am quite able to logically work through trouble shooting problems and have had to deal with many a vendor trying to fob off a design fault on user incompetence or ignorance.

I am experiencing the exact same problems described by fijiboy with my new N85 and have come to the same conclusions, that this is primarily a problem caused by a bug in Nokia's Symbian OS, which is simply unable to match a contact record containing a country code (e.g. +61412345678) to a non-internationalised version, if you will, of the very same number, i.e. 0412345678.
That said I must also point out that the problem at hand is of course in no way helped by a mobile carrier (in my case Vodafone Australia) sending the caller ID for calls without +XX country codes and at the same time including the country code as they should in SMS text messages.
Now theoretically Symbian's incapability to make the best of Vodafone (and I guess others') incomplete caller IDs is no wonder, since a missing country code cannot unambiguously be resubstituted by mere guessing. Just imagine you have two contacts with similar numbers only varying in their country code, e.g. +6112345 and +4912345. There is no way of matching a caller to either of the two contacts that is identified by the network operator as 12345.
HOWEVER that exact same task, due to the simple fact that I must have no such rare partial matches in all my many contacts, has never been a problem at all for any of my previous Nokia phones (all the way back to the mid-late 90s!!!) running older/different operating systems. For example my current backup phone being a Series 40 Nokia 6300, operating on NokiaOS (Intelligent System Architecture.
So unless Nokia can make their case and convince me otherwise the culprit is quite clear to me. Nokia has some extremely urgent bugfixing to do here. From similar postings in other forumsI have learned that the Apple iPhone has had some similar problems with caller ID matching, which have quickly and efficiently been fixed in the meantime so I hope that Nokia is already working on this problem. An official statement would be most welcome guys!
Otherwise I will, sad though it is, see no other choice but to turn my back on my preferred mobile phone manufacturer after over ten years, and make my next business phone a Blackberry or Android device.
Last but not least: Please stop suggesting this problem has anything to do with double contacts, including same contacts both on the SIM and in phone memory or outdated SIM cards. While I agree that rude and foul language should be left out of these forums, I can also understand fijiboy's growing frustration over repeated suggestions and pseudo-solutions that have been clearly ruled out before, including in his initial posting.

Guys,
I have been using E series phones for a while now. I began with E50, then I had E65 and now E51. I have stored all my contacts in international format for more than 10 years, since I travel also a lot. I have never experienced the thing that you are discribing here except when I stored the same number under two different entries either in the phone or on the SIM. I have run into the situation some times that you described but I always found a duplicate entry in the phonebook.
I understand now that you have tried to format the phone and put only one number in the phone memory. To be honest, I have more than 450 contacts in my phone now, all having at least 2 numbers associated with the contact and all of them being in international format. I don't experience the problem that you described at all on my E51 and didn't have it on my prior E series phones either.
I thought to change my E51 to an E66, now I got a little anxious if this is a good idea or not.
One other remark: I never enter a number on the phone to store, I always use MS Outlook to edit the contact and then I sync it via PCSuite to the phone...
Regards,
dembala

I beg your pardon, how is that rude. and in case you have not noticed i have been trying to help with your issue. apparently you are not here to either better understand your issues or solve your problems. if complaining is all you want to do then by all means click the contact us button and talk to nokia directly. this is and always has been a user to user forum to problem solve, trouble shoot and share ideas with each other. it does not mean that we have all the answers sometimes there is none. its a bug and that is it. so i suggest you chill out and concentrated on your device and not accusing someone who is trying to help of being rude. thanks

Hi,
I am experiencing the exact same problem with the 5800 Xpress Music and I had experienced it as well with the 6120c both runing under Nokia Symbian S60, but never experienced it with my older Nokia phones.
I also input and edits my contacts in Outlook and synch them. Outlook introduces a formating of its own in phone numbers with extra spaces and parentheses, it seems that removing this formating sometimes helps.
I wondered if the problem does not get worse when there is a large number of contacts.

I have a Nokia 6220 classic (symbian phone), sofware version (the *#0000# code) is 3.23, 3.23.227.03. model 6220c-1
So is there finally a new software update around that would solve this contact name problem.
No, it has nothing to do with duplicated contacts.
No, restart doesn't help.
No, removing international dial code doesn't make this problem go away too.

I have the E71 bought last week, on which I was having the same problem with incoming calls not showing the callers name/number. I called my service provider (3) and they switched on caller ID at their end - nothing to do with the handset at all i don't think - apparently its normally automatically switched on, but for some reason it wasn't working. They re-set that and now it works perfectly. Hope its the same case for all of you with yours because its VERY frustrating!

A so frustrating issue. Same problem with 5800XM. not a duplicates issue. THE problem appeared when I upgraded the firmware before this I hadn't the problem. It is caused by the way the phone identiies the number to match it with contacts list. for exemple in Lebanon we have several codes for mobile phones 03 and 70. All the contacts with 03 stored in internatinal are not identifed. The 70 are well recognised by the phones. Both of them are well recognised in SMSs.
Note; motorola has the same problem

I HAVE FIGURED THIS OUT!!!!
For starters, Nokia should pay me for this as I spent hours looking at different forums and nearly came tothe conclusion it was a software issue. IT IS NOT.
If you look at you Sim contacts. Ignore the ones stored on the phone. Most new Nokia's ignore the sim card when showing you your contacts but your numbers may still be on there. Here is the procedure on a Nokia N97. It is similar on the E66 as I have done it on my friends one as well.
Contacts
Options
Settings
CONTACTS TO DISPLAY - Select Sim Memory
(this then shows all numbers on the sim card)
Go back to your phone book and it will show all your old numbers which are on the sim.
DELETE ALL OF THEM or click mark all and delete.
Use the procedure above to then make you phone Select Phone Memory.
All your numbers will be there.
THEN all calls and SMS which come through from now on will show the names
THIS WILL SORT IT!
You can post donations directly to me or take a moment to look at some of our websites on www.justtheshop.com
Good Luck!!

Thanks for trying 4mobiles but, unfortunately, you have figured nothing out.
Have a good look at an E66 running current firmware and you will find that there is NO "Contacts To Display" in the Contacts/Options/Settings and that the only thing you can change under that menu is how the contacts are shown -First Name, Last name or the other way round.
I have NO contacts on my SIM at all - zip, zero, zilch.
Still doesn't work.
Nokia have already admitted to me in writing that the problem is in the firmware. They actually promised me on the phone (yes, they called me about this) that they would fix it. They are completely aware of the problem and had a great opportunity to resolve it in release 3 of the firmware.
instead they gave us YouTube, MySpace and FaceBook.
Why?
Because the network operators love that stuff. Makes you use up your data cap. Makes the operators push more Nokia phones because they're more profitable devices.
But fixing what is a basic flaw in the phone is of absolutely no interest to Nokia. It doesn't make them money.
Now that they sell completely unlocked iPhones in Australia I'm fully intending to pick one up on my next trip and that will be the end of my Nokia experience.
The unfortunate thing for Nokia is that the company I work for has been up till now a completely Nokia shop. We run over 10 of their E series smart phones. That's over now as well.
