Hi
I have got a new E63 and while I have seen plenty of discussions surrounding the problems with the light sensor not recognising darkness (not switching the keypad light on) I haven't seen any conclusive answers on how to fix this. It's only worked once in the week I've had the phone.
I was using the phone (the screen was still lit up) and I put it in my pocket and then took it out a second later and the keys were all lit up but when i put it in my pocket a second time and took it out it just as quickly it stopped working again and the keys were not lit up this time??? I have the latest firmware installed. (100.21.110) I haven't contacted Nokia yet but does anybody an E63 with a light sensor/keypad backlight that actually works properly?
Anybody know how to fix this?
Thanks in advance...

Right! I think I have found the problem! The keypad backlight DOES work consistently. This must be a battery saving technique which is actually pretty cool but there is still a slight problem...
If you unlock the phone in a dark room (doesn't have to be pitch dark) the keypad lights up as the light sensor thinks there's not enough light for you to see the keys. If you switch a light on, the keypad lights go out. If you then switch off the light so the room is dark again the keypad lights won't come on. You have to wait till the screen light goes out then press a key and the keypad lights up again. I have done this 5 or 6 times in a row now and the slight problem it seems is that the light from the screen leaks into the light sensor so it doesn't recognise darkness until the screen light goes out. Hope this makes sense. This seems like a bit of a design flaw in the placement of the light sensor as it is obviously too close to the screen, which is why it thinks there is light in the room if the screen light is on
Hmm, come on Nokia, how can you overlook that one?

Hi Guys, I also have this problem and it's infuriating.. the worst thing is i've found that the key pad never lights up when you receive or are replying to a text message. Aaaaaaargh! Is there any way of sorting this out through a software download or something? Any help on this issue would be appreciated, especially from the Nokia people! Many thanks

Hi, I found that blocking the light sensor with my finger turned on the keyboard backlight ...
Not very usefull but proves the backlight works ... Anyone found a solution to this problem?

Hi All,
I have the same problem.
Unfortunately the last firmware update (400.21.013) didn't solved the issue.
Have someone found a solution or contacted nokia support to have a response?
Thank you.

Hi, just to add another data point, my e63 was bought almost a year a ago. I've messed
around with various display settings and had hoped that the 400 firmware would fix it. Not for me.
It works in total darkness which is useful but usless compared to various other Nokia E and N phones I own/have owned.

Well, what works for me is:
Black tape over the light sensor. So basically, have deactivated the sensor.
Light sensor sensitivity set to my comfort
Light time-out set down to 10 seconds. (This to save battery charge.)
So, whatever the light conditions, the backlight turns on during usage. When not in use, the low time-out setting keeps the battery from draining.
