@ sizzy:
Unstable: In addition to the poor reception, it seems like the phone uses more time to update signal strength in its display (the signal strength bars).
GSM: Does that mean that the signal strength is better/more reliable when connected to GSM network instead of 3G?

Good luck. I gave up on mine after 3 weeks. Went back to my E51. We can't return it here for a refund (lousy consumer protection laws) so I'll hang on to it until there is a firmware update.
Signal strength is pathetic. My navigation software keeps failing GMXT - hanging and shutting itself off halfway. Don't know what I was thinking when I bought the phone.

It seems like the poor signal strength in GSM and 3G is a problem with all the Nokia E52. If a firmware update doesnt fix it then nothing will. The problems with the phone rebooting or going dead is experienced by all users. I think this phone will be like the Nokia N95 - will take alot of firmware updates to get it functioning correctly.

I have this problems too.
I had E51 - no problems, fast, good performance, N82 - as E51.
I wait for E52 too many months and signal reception is not good.
I want, that NOKIA give us refund or Call back E52 to repair/ change for another one E52.

Unlike normal handsets the antenna is located in the lower part of the handset.
I don't know, what an idiot made such decision, but we must live with it.
If the signal is too weak or distortions happen(in GSM mode), try to hold the handset by the top where the camera is located... it is inconvenient, but this is Nokia.

I have switched on to GSM mode instead of dual mode as a temporary measure. What kind of phone is this when you cant really use 3G!!! Anyways i hope firmware can solve this.. Nokia are you sorting this one out???
Other than that I have no rebooting issue, GMXT is good, just still unfamiliar with the keys when you are so used to E51 or most other nokia for keypad unlock; plus the extra width again need to get used to.

The location of the antenna is hardly the source of the problem here. We are talking about radio waves that can travel a great deal of distance thru multiple walls and whatnot. Are you saying it can't travel another 10cm?
No, the source of the problem is something different, hopefully software-based so it can be fixed in a future firmware.
But this also explains why some people have such poor battery life with the device, if the signal is poor the phone frenetically looks for a better signal, which will drain the battery fast.

"The location of the antenna is hardly the source of the problem here. "
Don't be silly. This is the main source of all connectivity problems. This is called "screening" and "signal suppression" By hand and by radiopaque parts of mobile.
"We are talking about radio waves that can travel a great deal of distance thru multiple walls and whatnot."
O_o Haven't you studied in SCHOOL !? Every material and object has different electric permitivity, and suppression ratio. So in metals and liquids radio-magnetic wave doesn't propagate at all ! That is your parts of mobile and human flesh. Didn't you hear anything about SAR? That is exactly how much signal power could be absorbed by your head.
Theres nothing go through you! Everything becomes a heat (it is bad for your brain, that's why SAR is important).
The possibility to receive GSM/UMTS in buildings is only just because of excessive area covering by extra base stations. That was not so in '90s and beginning of XXI ;-)
Classic configurations specifically use top located antennas to allow at least one narrow sector of antenna diagram to be open. And now it is closed completely.

I'm having a similar problem. My E55 won't go into 3/3.5g mode no matter what I do. I've upgraded my SIM card to a 4000 series and tried everything else with Rogers tech. support. They said it must be the phone.
Not matter what I do it will only run in 2G/EDGE mode. If I force it into UMTS then I get no connection at all.

Check the model type sticker on the box for working frequencies. Ask the operator for it's working frequency for UMTS.
There are RF bands on 850, 900, 1700, 1900 and 2100 MHz are possible for UMTS. If written on the box is not corresponding to your operator in your country... imported handset for example. AFAIK, in Europe bands are usually on 900/2100.

Well, sorry to put up this thread, but I have a "related" problem.
I only can use the phone in 3G mode..let me explain,I select dual mode, but If I only get gsm,it won't work...
Changed cards, did a reflash of the firmware..but nothing..and it takes about 15min to get signal when I boot!!!
Any solution or just warranty?I got the phone today as replacement of my E51 wich had a terrible low calling volume.
