I I finally figured this out, I have a Nokia E51 and a 2005 BMW X5. The phone paired ok with the car and I can receive and make calls via the car. The problem was that I couldn't transfer the contacts from my phone to the car.
I reset the pairing on the car as per the car handbook, the car responds showing a message the it is ready for bluetooth paring. I went to the contacts on my phone, selected a contact and sent it as a business card via bluetooth. The phone responded with the message that it was successfully sent. I then marked all contacts and sent them as business cards via bluetooth. The phone responded with the message that it was successfully sent.
Then I paired the phone to the car.
All the contacts were in the car.

Your system worked.Thank you.
Telstra , who supplied the E51 ,were useless and could give no help.
Managed to transfer all contacts, but needed to do it in stages.
